A Must for All Fusers!

I was afraid that this book might be a bit technical for an amateur artist such as myself. But what a pleasant surprise it has been! Not only does this volume contain pictures of beautiful glass work (towards which I will continue to aspire), but it also has very practical guidelines that make it seem possible to pick up this art form, even for a novice such as myself. And the best part is the way it has been written--when reading it I almost felt as though I was having a one on one conversation with the author, being given personal, light-hearted and yet meaningful instruction, rather than feeling as though I were reading from an assigned tome in a lecture hall. Great instruction on both the "how to" and the "how NOT to," as well as gorgeous pictures. A must for all fusers!

It's about time we start having books for children to help them understand the differences in people. It's important for them to understand God made us all the same on the inside of our hearts and we should treat each other with love and respect no matter what no matter how we look on the outside. Wonderful book for all ages.Highly recommend it!!!!

Good collection on a DVD-ROM. Would rather have the books.

Pro: I get the whole workshop Companion Series and only take up the space of a DVD on the shelf.

Con: Oh where do I start? How about the poor way to brows and read this series. Basically this DVD is a medium quality PDF version of the original books. It's like they scanned them in made a PDF and then burned a CD-ROM to match the dated material in the book. Yes the material is dated, but these books were written in the 1980's and 90's.

The author Nick Engler is a very knowledgeable dude and I loved the old Shopsmith video series he used to do as I am a Shopsmith owner and the book uses some Shopsmith equipment to do various projects. He even had a website (which is very outdated,not finished and seems to be living in perpetuity of under construction) that complimented this book series. The books were great and I have a couple. I wish I would have bought the whole series of books rather than spend the money on this very user-unfriendly DVD-ROM. Really ROM is still used? Come on.

The DVD-ROM is useful and the cheapest and now the only way to get the out of print book series. But I suggest you comb the interwebs for the book versions of the series and lever the DVD-ROM off your list. It is just too hard to read and use on the computer. The search feature is lacking good returns and the PDF files remind me of being at work and reading through hundreds of paged of data just to find what you are interested in.

I'm glad this exists as it give the younger woodworkers an opportunity to see some quality stuff and basic skills at a value price. But a bit more work on bring this series into the future would have been worth it. Buy it or don't I;d rather have the books, but the DVD will do.

About the Author
John Cheever, best known for his short stories dealing with upper-middle-class suburban life, was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1912. Cheever published his first short story at the age of seventeen. He was the recipient of a 1951 Guggenheim Fellowship and winner of a National Book Award for The Wapshot Chronicle in 1958, the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Stories of John Cheever, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and an American Book Award. He died in 1982, at the age of seventy.

oh what a good start to reading john cheever

This book is only a 100 pages and their is so much in a few words. "She was as women go relatively punctual and He had come to believe that punctuality in engagements was an infallible gauge of sexual spontaneity. He had observed that,without exception, women who were tardy for dinner engagements were unconsciously delayed in their erotic transports and that women who were early for lunch or dinner would sometimes climax in the taxi on the way home." IF you like that passage you will enjoy this book. Read more John Cheever.

Poignant, Beautiful, Truthful ... a bit Preachy

This is lovely Cheever. So few pages, and yet so much substance. A book of great truths told through small details. Understanding the difference between those who would or wouldn't stop to pick blackberries on the shoulder of a massive interstate highway ...

I would often pause and reread a paragraph - amazed that something so insightful could be so relatively insignificant within the context of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed myself in this read of an old man, feuding neighbors, love, dissapointment, insecurity, greed ... and American life.

It's not my place to be glad for Cheever, but I felt a sense of satisfaction for him - for the fact that he got this wonderful work done before he died.

My only critique is that the environmentalist message gets a little too preachy and loses the subtlety a message embedded in a novel should have. Mind you - I have no issue with the message - only with the way it is presented towards the end of the story. But like his main character - Cheever was an old man with a purpose. And if he was desperate for his cause - such that he stepped slightly over the line between fiction and nonfiction ... well for that he should be forgiven.

A worthwhile read, which I read on a rainy evening as suggested. It is now 2:00 am, and the book is back on my shelf. I am only saddened that Cheever left no more stories after this one.

A finely crafted novel by an American master.

Oh, What A Paradise It Seems is John Cheever's last novel, published just before his death in June 1982. It differs from his previous works, which mainly focused on suburban commuters, as it tells the story of an older man, but it still retains Cheever's wit and surrealness. The astonishing thing about this book is how deep the story goes, and yet it is only 100 pages long. It would take other authors 400 pages to write this story. It is, as the first sentence says, "A story to be read in bed in an old house on a rainy night."

Excellent Ideas

The book itself, while designed in part for teacher, is perfectly useable by someone wishing to improve their own compositions. Some of the ideas are rather elementary, but there also many that are intermediately difficult. The book provides ideas for improving the melody of a piece, ways to enhance/ vary the harmony, aswell as endings and transitions between large sections. Again, while some of the ideas provided in this book are elementary, one can take the idea and advance it further. I have been composing and learning the piano for almost two year now, and I can assure you this book definitely has improved my compositions greatly.

I would recommend this book to beginner/intermediate composers. Advanced composers will find the book of little use.

Stephen Mumford is Professor of Metaphysics at the Department of Philosophy, University of Nottingham, where he is also Head of the School of Humanities and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. His most famous book is Dispositions, but he also authored Laws in Nature and Watching Sport: Aesthetics, Ethics and Emotions. He has also written extensively for general readers, including articles in Times Higher Education magazine, and he is a frequent public speaker.

The Unthinkable

Is there any value in thinking about the world and its arrangements? Does one should inquire about questions that aren't scrutinized by observation? This short book tries to answer these questions and, along the way, gives the reader a first look in some crucial metaphysics problems. The text is well organized and succeed in presenting the material in an understandable way. This book is well suited for a reader that doesn't have previous expertise in the matter. Sometimes the reading can be hard but, in the end, the work is rewarded. Usefull readings are indicated in the end of the book, along with some tips.

GOOD INTRODUCTION, OBLIGATORY READING

This is a very good and pleasant to read introduction to metaphysics
.
But, while main subjects are covered, or at least mentioned, I missed a discussion of "chance/random" and its relation with causality. And, when discussing what is possible (ch. 76), the notions of modalities might well have been presented, perhaps with some concepts from modal logic, leading to a partly contingent view of the past and future.

Some ideas from quantum mechanics might also have been taken up, all the more so because of their importance for both the body-mind interaction problem (pp. 69-71) and possible worlds (pp. 79-82).

To provide space for doing so, the attempt to legitimize concern with metaphysics by comparison with science (in the final chapter) could have been skipped. Indeed, I found it somewhat demeaning metaphysics, which does not need it. Enough to say that every person who presumes to be fully mature must be able to engage in "thinking in the abstract" (p. 104); and (2) cannot but be curious about the nature of reality - the subject matter of metaphysics.

I go one step further: If I could I would test the abstract thinking ability of political leaders and dismiss all who failed. I know that most of them are unable to succeed in such a test - as clearly reflected in the way they manage the world.

Accordingly, I strongly recommend this book as a first introduction to metaphysics, to be followed by some more readings -first of all, by persons who presume to lead humanity into the future.

Perfect example of what makes so many of the books in this series great...

I can not recommend this book more highly.

It is concise, informative, profound, exceedingly witty, and an overall joy to read.

The clarity that the author was able to impart on a complicated subject that is often written about in a boring, muddled manner impressed me to no end. The even-handed way he dealt with conflicting viewpoints was yet another positive. Even the color scheme on the cover is the nicest one I have seen so far :)

This book is phenomenal; any person with even a passing interest in philosophy will enjoy it immensely.
