Griffin is eminently qualified to write about the latest developments in the field of animal cognition. His previous books on the subject include The Question of Animal Awareness ( LJ 12/1/76) and Animal Thinking ( LJ 5/15/84). Griffin intends Animal Minds to "be a representative sampling of the wide range of scientific and scholarly opinion about animal minds," and he succeeds admirably. He contends that the significance of animal consciousness falls into three categories--philosophical, ethical, and scientific--and he provides extensive discussion and examples of each type. Some of the most interesting and thought-provoking examples are to be found in the chapters on communication as evidence of thinking and on deception and manipulation. While this is definitely not casual reading and will appeal primarily to students and professionals in animal cognition, the dedicated general reader will find much to think about here.

Unsophisticated interpretation of important evidence

Griffin, one of the founding fathers of cognitive ethology, summarizes the best scientific evidence that animals have a rich mental life that involves thought, intentionality, and consciousness. He focuses on three phenomena: the versatility and adaptiveness of animal behavior, nervous system physiology, and animal communication. To his credit, Griffin is not dogmatic; he admits that much scientific work remains before any of the evidence can be considered significant, and he is willing to consider interpretations of the data that reject his own views on animal minds.
In the end, unfortunately, Griffin's impassioned claims about behavior that "indicates" complex thought don't go far enough. The book consists of relatively undetailed reports of animal studies. He provides little detail about scientific methodology and does not develop an adequate theoretical framework for a deep understanding animal mentality. He has no clear methodology for interpreting the strength of the data he summarizes, and consistently conflates important distinctions between perception, consciousness, and self-consciousness. Although Griffin champions an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems of mind, he pays little heed to the many philospohical problems with understanding crucial mental concepts.
Committed defenders of animal minds will enjoy this general retrospective by one of their intellectual heroes. Readers who want a deeper exploration must turn elsewhere -- Collen Allen and Marc Bekoff's *Species of Mind* would be an excellent starting point.

AN INTERESTING SURVEY OF RESEARCH INTO THE MINDS OF VARIOUS ANIMALS

Donald Redfield Griffin (1915-2003) was an American professor of zoology at various universities who did seminal research in animal behavior, animal navigation, acoustic orientation and sensory biophysics.

In the Preface to this 1992 book, Griffin states, "This book will review evidence of versatile thinking by animals, and of equal significance will be a representative sampling of the wide range of scientific and scholarly opinion about animal minds. This spectrum of strongly advocated views demonstrates the basic importance attached to the nature of animal mentality by both scientists and philosophers." In the first chapter, he elaborates, "The aim of this book is to reopen the basic question of what life is like, subjectively, to nonhuman animals, and to outline how we can begin to answer this challenging question by analyzing the versatility of animal behavior, especially the communicative signals by which animals sometimes appear to express their thoughts and feelings."

He points out that "Adaptiveness is a completely separate matter from the possibility of conscious thinking. Because mantis shrimp are crustaceans a few centimeters in length, it is assumed a priori that they cannot possibly be conscious." (pg. 200) After reviewing the various "Ape Language" experiments, he says, "On balance, it now seems clear that apes have learned to communicate simple thoughts."

He concludes on the note, "I am confident that with patience and critical investigation we can begin to discern what life is like, subjectively, to particular animals under specific conditions.... Because mentality is one of the most important capabilities that distinguishes living animals from the rest of the known universe, seeming to understand animal minds is even more exciting and significant than elaborating our picture of inclusive fitness or discovering new molecular mechanisms."

I enjoyed it.

I recently read this book for a class, and found it very readable. Granted, it doesn't go as far into interpretations of what all of this means, and more leaves that up to the reader. Try the book Animal Consciousness by Daise and Michael Radner if you want to go more into the philosophical, and not a run through of animal behavior. It will also help you, in addition to this book, come to your own informed conclusions about the reality of animal consciousness and thought.

Different book?

I just finished reading the 18 reader reviews of "The Lost Child of Philomena", before writing my own review of the book. And I can't figure out if everybody reviewing this book read the same book. About half of the reviewers referred to the book as mostly about Philomena, an Irish "Magdalene", torn apart from her child after raising him for three years in a home for unwed mothers in Ireland. The others appeared to have read a different book -and the same one I read - which is mostly about the child, Michael Hess, who was adopted by an American couple in the mid-1950's. The story is mostly about HIS life in the US and his growing up with the angst that adopted children sometimes have about their origins, as well as his coming to terms about his sexuality and life in college and law school and life in Washington DC as an official at the Reagen and HW Bush administrations and then at the Republican National Committee. Only at the end were Martin Sixsmith and Philomena brought back into the story.

Okay, that's not a problem for the purchaser and reader of the book, now retitled "Philomena: A Mother, A Son, and A 50 Year Search", as long as s/he knows in advance that's NOT what the book is about. This book is about 75% about Michael, his life, and his family - which IS very interesting - and about 25% about Irish shaming of young pregnant women, the eventual "selling" of their babies, and Philomena's search for her given-up child. I am going to see the movie, starring Dame Judi Dench this weekend, and I'll bet that the movie is more about Philomena than her child.

I point this out because the movie marketers seem to have taken a book - more about the son - and turned it around and made the movie more about the mother, and then tried to rebrand the book to align with the movie. Either that, or the early reviewers were reading an entirely different book than the rest of us, a book that WAS mostly about the mother and her search.

I also couldn't quite tell if the book was fiction or non-fiction. If it was non-fiction, then a whole lot of people know what they were saying 50 years ago. Sixsmith writes in the afterward that he interviewed a lot of the characters alive at that point, but then he also put characters together and changed some names. All in all, I didn't think the book was particularly well-written. I'm hoping the movie is better.

Lost Child of Philomena Lee

The adoption process run in Ireland by Catholic Authorities sold children for money, without regard for the women and their children, effectively exploiting Mothers and their children whose lives were forever affected by the inhumane deception and cruelty - State & Church benefited financially. Secrecy, lies and illegal practices were the order of the day at Sean Ross Abbey fully supported by strong political governmental connections.

"The Lost Child of Philomena Lee" by Michael Sixsmith is a tragically true story. At first I hesitated to buy it, 451 pages long, but once I started to read I couldn't put it down. Mike/Anthony Lee searched for years. He felt a strong connection with his Irish roots and hoped one day his Mother, Philomena Lee, might find him.

Women victims in these Prison type Religious Institutions served as slaves and used to breast feed their children (cost saving for the Convent) and then when no longer needed thrown out without any guidance, counseling or meaningful support, which made way for more inmates. It's a wonder that any of these women and their children survived.

I liked the book but...sorry spoiler alert

I saw the movie and was very curious about the actual story. Of course, the fact that the " lost child"is dead means that a lot of the story is recreated based on interviews with friends and family. The book is mostly about Anthony aka Michael but I actually was more interested in Philomena and how she dealt with the religious culture that treated her like a criminal. I thought it was a good book and well written but its focus was not exactly as I expected it to be. Ironic that Michael helped to elect people whose policies may well have caused and/or contributed to his death. While baby Anthony seemed so sweet, grown-up Michael was not so likeable ,(and the story of his life went on too long). He should have used his connection to elected officials for the greater good even if it meant risking rejection. Very sad that he and Philomena were kept apart by a vicious, judgemental culture for their entire lives and he never got to hear from her, how loved he really was.

About the Author
Charles Henderson is a veteran of more than twenty-three years in the United States Marine Corps, with a distinguished career spanning from Vietnam to the Gulf War, after which he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. In addition to writing his own books and for various publications, he runs his family's cattle enterprise in Peyton, Colorado. His first book was critically acclaimed military classic Marine Sniper. Incredible Story of the life of Charles Hathcock

This is an excellent book about the Vietnam war, the Marine Sniper Program and an American hero Carlos Hathcock. I enjoyed it immensely. The author detailed many missions and battles Carlos was involved in. Carlos was the quintessential sniper and saved many American lives with his sniper skills and his heroic actions on a burning Marine vehicle during a mission. Thank you Carlos Hathcock for your extraordinary service and to Charles Henderson for putting it together in a most memorable book!

Bent cover and pages

The product is exactly what i expected and wanted when i ordered. It arrived on time and is a great read. Im very upset that when i opened the package the front cover and about 15 pages were bent. Not the end of the world but i bought it new and would like it to arrive this way. Product good, shipping not so much

The Best Hollistic Approach to Endurance for Life

Phil Maffetone has followed up his highly influential works of over a decade ago with a volume not only validated by basic science and research but more importantly experienced and felt by those willing to use the methods. I am a physician and lifelong distance runner trying now to teach healthy lifelong endurance for patients to help them deal with life...not just athletics. I discovered Phil's principles after recovering from foot surgeries from overuse running injuries in 2000. Training slower was a tough pill to swallow at first but as soon as I saw the results of aerobic development in how I felt all day there was no turning back to the "no pain, no gain" approach. Now its "No Pain, Thank You."
With his methods I've achieve a sub 2:35 marathon in 4 decades and we've even opened a small running and walking store in a small rural community teaching his principles ([...]
We are also trying to transform how the US Air Force approaches fitness and help them achieve success in their annual fitness tests and their demanding jobs. This, of course, involves Maffetone principles.

A book with some good info but lots of shortcomings

I want to highly recommend this book and its approach [and I have, in the past, to friends] but I would now hesitate after 1 year with Maffetone. Today, I find myself unsure of the principles and frustrated with the gaps left open within this book. Let me summarize what I have found that I believe is very worthwhile and/or appealing:

* The principle that fat utilization must be maximized for peak endurance performance

* Dietary principles of reducing excessive carbohydrate intake and eliminating allergenic foods (such as gluten) for optimal health

* The appeal of an relatively easy-intensity way to good health and peak performance

As one who'd tried higher intensity training efforts for amateur running and cycling, I found Maffetone's message very appealing. I especially gravitated to it after cutting the carbohydrate in my diet which limited my access to higher intensity training. I tried adhering to his heart-rate based formula to keep my training intensities within the prescribed training band and started, after 3 months, to see slivers of success in training. On the treadmill, over time, I eventually saw a 0.5 mph improvement in pace at the same heart rate. On the bicycle trainer, a 30 watt improvement at Maff heart rates. These changes were very gradual, however, as I train only 3-4 hours / week. In fact, for 3 months, I saw virtually NO improvement at all. Now, I was not a perfect adherent to the principle of NO anaerobic work; I did weight train, but only 2x a week and only for 30 minutes at a time (actual time in the act of weight lifting was likely only 15 min a week with rest-between-sets time factored out). Does this invalidate my results? I should hope that the human body is not so frail that a mere lifting of something heavy a couple of times, on off days, is enough to completely destroy aerobic adaptations. What a weak species we would be. Consider that I'm not training 10-15 hours a week as many, more dedicated runners might be doing. Either way, you should know from where I'm coming from. Maffetone does indicate that he considers any aerobic training in excess of his prescribed heart rate formula or weight training of ANY kind (regardless of the heart rate) to be `anaerobic' work that could interfere or destroy aerobic adaptations. Nevertheless, I do feel that my training schedule, overall, was light enough that I was exercising well within my recover abilities. Nevertheless, my results on his program were modest at best. I sleep well, eat fantastically healthy compared to the average Joe (frutis, vegetables, low carb diet, omega-3s daily, lean meats, healthy amounts of good fats --- you get the point). Even though I did see what could be regarded as "significant" improvement in a couple of markers, I found that very little of this translated during races. As such, let me summarize the issues I've come to see with the Maffetone method:

* The 180 formula does NOT take into account individual variations in heart rate stroke volume or muscle physiology for different sports. Maffetone does not consider maximum heart rate nor resting heart rate to be significant. Instead, his formulas are purely a function of age and a few modifiers that have nothing to do with your heart's individual characteristics. This seems to fly in the face of common sense and science. If you have a larger heart with a greater stroke volume, then you will be pumping more blood at 140 beats, doing more work and feeling a higher level of perceived exertion (and likely have a lower max heart rate) than someone with a smaller heart who, at 140 beats, might feel as though they are barely working. This is why most heart rate-based programs factor in maximum (and some resting heart rate) - the level of exertion for someone with a max hr at 170 will be different than someone with a max of 200. In addition, Maffetone does not consider "perceived exertion" which varies between sports at a given heart rate, to be significant: one Maff heart rate for all. Really? A swimmer should use the same heart rate as a runner though we know that the muscle composition of the upper body is likely very different than the legs (which are designed for long-range locomotion)? Isn't that why you would likely have a higher perceived exertion at a given heart rate in swimming or perhaps cycling than running - different muscle fiber composition? I should think so but Maff believes that the same metabolic demands are being made so the training effect is identical. I dare to say that this is likely to be proved wrong by science but I only dispute it today by my intuition that "perceived " exertion is a real phenomenon that is being ignored by Maffetone. He does not present a cogent explanation for ignoring it other than saying that weight bearing sports produce a higher perceived exertion. Weak. It certainly doesn't explain the difference between cycling and swimming which are both non-weight bearing but generate different perceived exertions. I strongly suspect that more sugar-burning aerobic fibers are involved in swimming given the use of upper body muscles and, hence, the higher perceived exertion than running (which uses muscles with a higher % of red muscle fibers) at a given heart rate but that's' for a physiologist to work out. I don't buy Maff's explanation at all, however.

* There is absolutely no guidance with regard to training volumes for different sports what-so-ever. Inexcusable. On the one hand, we're given, effectively, a simple one-size-fits-all 180 heart rate formula that does not take into account anything substantive in the way of individual cardiovascular physiology - yet we're told that training volumes are largely and individual matter. OK, fine, but can you give me a suggestion for the minimums here? A range? Can I improve at such low heart rates training 3x a week for 30 minutes a day? No guidance. Let me save you some suspense here - unlikely. For a book about `racing', there's an almost total lack of any sort of even semi-structured program regarding durations and frequency for ANY sport (save one small and not very useful example of a triathlete schedule)- just a lot of sidebar anecdotes of people training for unspecified periods of time and having "success" or reducing volumes, when specified, from 18 to 12 hours a week (volumes far in excess of many amateurs I know). While it might vary from individual to individual and given your goals, I think we can all agree that training 1x/week for 1 minute will get you nowhere. So there, that's a lower boundary we can all agree on. Extreme case? Yes - but the point is one can and ought to give a lower limit from which to start a training program to see progress and then principles upon which to evaluate whether volume should increase or decrease.

* Heart rate variations are not thoroughly discussed. There seems to be this implicit and rather impractical notion that you can train up to the maximum prescribed heart rate and just hold it there - as if it is some number that can be reached and held. If my maximum "aerobic" heart rate, as prescribed by the 180 formula, is 140, I can guarantee you it will drift to 141, 142, even 144 and then back to 140, 139, 138 within any given 2 minute period of time - I know, I've seen it happen all the time. At such low heart rates, my body is so relaxed that if I so much as *think* about something a little exciting, my heart rate will spike. How much variation around my max Maff heart rate should be tolerated? We're told, none. So, given the natural variation in heart rate that occurs in training (i.e. I see +/- 3 beats, routinely), best to play it safe and shoot for Maff -3 so as not to exceed it for even a brief period. All in all, at such low heart rates, it is subject to considerable "noise" from your state-of-mind, thoughts, ambient temperatures, etc.

* Mis-use of the term "aerobic". Maffetone clearly defines what he means by "aerobic" early on to refer to that which uses predominately fat for fuel while fully acknowledging that, technically, sugar is burned aerobically as well. Nevertheless, anything that uses sugar, predominately, for fuel, is deemed anaerobic for purposes of discussion in the book. Fine. However, later in the book, he seeks to emphasize the value of his training principles by pointing out that the aerobic system provides 99% of the energy for long distance aerobic events. OK, wait a minute. Now, yes, that's true, but that involves both the sugar and fat burning systems (and sugar burning would actually account for a larger portion of that 99% than fat at higher intensity aerobic events) but he "implies" that it's the fat burning system providing that 99%. Let's keep the discussion about "aerobic" system straight here and acknowledge that the sugar-burning component IS a critical system for racing success as well.

* Results. Bottom line, if you train for modest volumes (read: 5 hours / week or fewer), I think your success will be modest at best. I conducted 95% of my aerobic training with Maffetone principles and, while I've seen some improvement, it was absolutely dwarfed, in comparison, by my prior success with programs such as Smart Coach provided by Runner's world wherein, training at more moderate intensities for most of my longer runs and doing just one speed workout a week resulted in a 9 minute improvement in my half marathon time in just 3.5 months of training (40s/mile improvement in pace). My average training week was only 18 miles/week (3 hours/week) when using the program prescribed by Smart Coach [and I weight trained....]. Compare that to training for 4-5 hours / week using Maff and I've seen - I don't know,....maybe 1-2 minutes of improvement for a half marathon- if you squint. In fact, Chris Carmichael has pointed out in his book "The Time-Crunched Cyclist" that, if you have less than 8 hours / week to train, traditional, lower-intensity programs just don't work for such folks. That's the only guidance I have right now and I would pass that on to those considering the Maff approach.

So, while I think there is some value here, I think a follow-on book with much more specific guidance is needed. Realistic training expectations need to be established based on possible training volumes. Actual training programs should be indicated with clear discussions of "frequency" and "duration" for running, cycling, swimming and triathlons. Different distances could be discussed as well. Given the size of this book, the actual intellectual content could have been condensed to 1/3 the size. That leaves 2/3rd of relative fluff that could have been used to address the aforementioned gaps in concrete training advice and coaching.

Buy a heart rate monitor and work slower

That's what 90% of this book's information revolves around, so if you are going to use his methods, understand that you will need one, and that you will be monitoring all of your workouts.

There is a lot of other information in the book, and he has added a lot of anecdotes from individuals that have used his methods and had success, so whatever your sport or activity, if you are doubting what he says, others have too, but doing it his way has given them great results. Just about every person that gives you their story basically says "I thought there was no way this would work, it sucked and I thought that I was losing my speed and ability, and in the end I was not only faster, but I had fewer injuries."

I just want you to be mentally prepared for the fact that if you buy this book, and are going to use his methods, you should understand that buying a heart rate monitor is mandatory.

Also, there aren't really any pictures or charts that are better in the print version than the kindle version, so if you are trying to decide if the hard copy is worth it, you can get the kindle without losing anything.

Excellent Book - Passed FPGEE 21 years after graduation

I have passed the FPGEE exam (September 2015). I have never written a big review like this. The main purpose of this review is to share my honest opinion about the book, The APhA Complete Review for the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination and explain the exam pattern to new test takers. I did my Pharmacy course from 1990 - 1994. After a long journey through rough roads, I decided to become a pharmacist in USA to serve as a bridge between physicians and patients (Not to be served but to serve :). If you have lost so many years after your Pharmacy course - Don't give up. I have carefully prepared for FPGEE by using APHA. Here I am briefing about the book and the exam pattern in addition to how to prepare and score well in this exam.
The best part of this book:
1. This book is designed in such a way graduates from foreign nations can understand and follow. This book is organized as follows.
First section – Basic Biomedical Sciences – 1-7 Chapters – You may expect 40 questions;
Second section – Pharmaceutical Sciences – 8 – 16 – You may expect 75 questions;
Third section – Chapters 17- 24 – Social, Behavioral and Administrative Pharmacy Sciences – You may expect 55 questions
Finally, Clinical Sciences – Chapters 25 – 34 – You may expect 80 questions.
In addition, it has the list of normal laboratory values to common drug interactions. As you all know the total no of questions is 250.
2. It is compiled with lots of easy points to be memorized and remembered. Each and every chapter has some practice questions. Study at least one chapter a day and take a test with honesty. Don’t practice speed-read or just scan this book. It may not work. Each and every line is important. I would prefer to take notes while studying and certainly it will help you while you are revising this book.
3. Spend 3-5 hours a day for at least 3 - 4 months. Try to understand and revise several times before your exam.
4. Answering multiple choice questions: While taking the exam don’t see the answer first. Read the question two times and recall the answer then search for the suitable answer from the choices. Eliminate the wrong answers and find the right choice. Furthermore, I have followed the elimination method also. In this review whatever I have followed I am sharing with everyone. Hope it helps you to study well and pass the exam.
5. Make a plan for your study – In your calendar write the things to be done from your syllabus (blue print) and stick on to the plan.
6. Don’t spend too much time in watching YouTube videos. Because by the end of the day you may not remember what chapter you have studied. The following website may be beneficial. (...)

I would strongly recommend this book as your primary study book. In addition, for Pharmacology part I have studied Lippincott Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology and for the calculation part I have studied Pharmaceutical Calculations by Howard C. Ansel. Finally I have used quizlet also for revising biochemistry part.
Don't worry... You will score well.. Let us use the rest of our life to help others.

If you want to pass your FPGEE ..this is THE book

If you want to pass your FPGEE. this is the book !!
I passed my FPGEE reading this book. The chapters are concise and to the point. The exercise at the back of each chapter helps a lot. Additionally, the summary of the chapter helps.
The chapter on clinical science and management are what you need to know for passing the test.

However, this book is NOT enough for pharmacology/medchem, you have to supplement that from lippencott or katzung (that has good med chem)
Also, for calculations this book isn't enough, you should refer to naplax review, or mannan.

other than that I find that this book is essential for passing the FPGEE.

good luck for anyone taking the exam !!

Great value!

At my college, they have this same book just with the University's name written across the top of it for about one hundred dollars. I realized that there was nothing special about the book with the University's name on it so I bought this one in the loose leaf copy and could not be happier with it! I bought this one for a lot less money than what the book store was charging. The page numbers are a little different but the chapters are identical! If you don't mind using a binder to carry around your text book I would completely recommend it because it is cheaper and if you only need a specific section it is easy to take out the pages you need and only use those pages.
The text book is alright and a great review and basis for learning business concepts.

It did not have the e text access card package and we had to pay an additional $50.00 to get access for her class. I could have bought a cheaper book that actually said it didn't come with the e text access card package.

I enjoy reviewing in this book or previewing the lecture material for immunohematology. Since I print my powerpoint 6 slides/pg, this offers a nice blown up version of the pictures and diagrams my prof uses from the publisher. I think reading for class from this book really helps me enforce the concepts. And it was also nice that my used/like new book was in excellent condition.

Most of all I needed the book because of the transfusion practices. This is a mandatory continue education in Puerto Rico, so I need the book for review and look out for the new practices in blood transfusion. The book has been useful in coferences preparation. I will recommend the book for the persons who are studing or working in laboratories (MT) and on investigation or research, or for nurses who offered conferences about blood transfusion.

This book broaches the almost taboo question of the suitability of spreading democracy and capitalism across the globe as though the combination were gospel. The problems inadvertently caused by dramatic switches to free market democracy grow more glaring as globalization increases, and this book is a good start at getting me to learn and think about how to address these issues. Aside from being original and creative, this book has the properties of being well organized, being easy to read, often trading depth for breadth, and raising many more questions than it answers.

The first 50% of the book is a survey of various market dominant minorities within various countries, including the Chinese in Southeast Asia, the Tutsis amongst the Hutu, the whites in Latin America, the Jews in Russia, the whites in Africa, the Lebanese in west Africa. Chua sketches histories of how the minorities rose to disproportionate wealth and sometimes gives anecdotes for how members of various populations explain the phenomena to contrast the attitudes of the various ethnic groups.

Then Chua goes on to describe the backlashes against free market democracy and their most obvious beneficiaries (the market dominant minorities), the backlash ranging from nationalization or government seizure of industries or properties previously owned by market dominant minorities to discriminatory laws to genocide. Democracy allows this government-sanctioned backlash to occur because the long suffering majority is eager to vote into office candidates who promise to "reclaim the country's wealth" (from the minority and back to, supposedly, the majority), running on slogans to the tune of "Kenya for Kenyans," "Serbia for Serbs," etc. This backlash is often disastrous economically (nationalized industries often do horribly in the hands of people who are suddenly supposed to run them but don't know how), politically (corruption), and humanely (by encouraging violence). Here she posits that nationalization of industries comes from ethnonationalism rather than socialism/communism.

Although the USA is one of the main pushers of the free market democracy cocktail, Chua points out that the USA never had to endure such a prescription itself. Rather, everyone from the founding fathers onward had considered the problem of the relatively poor majority voting to "reclaim" the wealth of a minority and had put preventative measures in place, from poll taxes to literacy requirements. Furthermore Chua theorizes that, unlike Americans with the culture of the American dream, few people in developing countries believe free markets will allow them to go "from rags to riches." Thus the difference between poor Americans and poor non-Americans: unlike other poor people, poor Americans vote with the hope they will be rich one day and so tend to vote in ways that often seem counter to their own self interest. In addition the USA (along with China) is in the special state of having a market dominant majority instead of a minority, which is obviously much more stable in a democracy.

Chua ends the book with several suggestions of how these issues can be addressed and includes the example of Thailand, where Chinese were forcibly assimilated into Thai culture. She also throws in the case study of the USA as a market dominant minority at a global level, thus incurring all the consequences that come with that status, including inspiring feelings of envy, hatred, and humiliation (non-Americans hate the USA but still want to be US citizens).

The flammable combination of free market democracy and market dominant minorities begs the question of why market dominant minorities exist in the first place. It seems like there are as many explanations as there are occurrences and Chua gives many histories but I am left wondering more about this question. Her concluding suggestions for addressing the problems of inequality across ethnicities are worth reading, and in the end one wonders if the USA isn't pushing free market democracy too quickly and thoroughly, and to its own detriment, and whether a more suitable political and economic model could be found.

A classic endures

Although critics of 'World On Fire' point out that there exist other reasons for inter-ethnic violence [other than rapid democratization in societies with market-dominant minorities], Professor Chua's thesis, and considerable research remains relevant and important. I am a late comer to the book, and wish I had read it years ago! She accurately predicted the results of recent rapid democratization in Egypt, which followed her logic, as an anti-Israeli demagogue (Morsi) won the popular vote. It is relevant even in ongoing conflicts such as that in Syria, where a hated minority (Alawite) holds on to power through the help of Russia and China. Her later books seem to have grown out of this one, and tried to answer the urgent voices calling for greater historical depth and breadth on this subject, which is in the headlines every day.
It's also very well written....a page burner that can do more than enchant!
