Great book but not a hardcover.

I love the book but am a bit pissed that I paid a little more for it on here because it said it was hardcover when it is not. Its a softcover that is made to look like a hardcover. I'm guessing they don't actually make this in a hardcover version. Just wanted to warn everyone.

I had no idea how prolific Christophe Szpajdel was prior to seeing so much of his work laid out so beautifully in this collection. One look at this book and you will never look at a black metal logo as unreadable tree root font ever again. Wonderfully inspiring.

Breath Taking

Christophe's work is iconic and this volume of it is epic. Page after page of hand crafted brilliance. It would be short sighted to say this is only a "Death Metal" logo book. Christophe's Art Deco and Art Nouveau work is equally amazing. I've purchased the book on 4 separate occasions for other illustrators. A must have in any art book collection.

It's a great summary of the history of contemporary philosophy. I certainly appreciated a succinct description of some of the most key philosophers and their ideas, as well as some of the initial movements that led to logical positivism, metaphysics, and the contemporary concepts of language. If looking to jump into philosophy, this would be a great place to start in laying the foundation. It's an easy read. Not as thick and heavy in its concepts. It tries to explain in a clear way, so that your average person can pick it up and understand

An Elegant and Intelligent History of Analytic Philosophy

This is a terrific introduction for students who are new to the subject. It is admirably clear and very well written. I will outline here some of the advantages this book offers for the beginner.

1) It is very much a brief history of the subject. Analytic philosophy has been around for a least 120 years, and like most philosophy its history has been difficult and contentious. The author exhibits great skill in illuminating the most important aspects of analytic philosophy in such a succinct venue.

2) For those with limited exposure to philosophy, at the end of each chapter there are background snippets which explain in simple language some of the important and technical concepts necessary for a full understanding of the text.

3) The breath of the discussions is impressive. It's all here---the logicism of the earliest period of analytic philosophy, insightful discussions of the founders (Frege, Russell, Moore, and Wittgenstein), the Vienna Circle and Logical Positivism, and the post WWII linguistic turn. Crucial later thinkers are also given their due (Quine, Kuhn, Putnam, Rorty).

4) More recent topics are also addressed. Philosophy of mind and philosophy of language, modal logic, ethics and metaethics, just to name a few. Here I may add some of the other giants of philosophy brilliantly analyzed---Lewis, Davidson, Grice, and Kripke.

After digesting this wonderful book, you may want to climb the ladder of knowledge further. For those interested in Wittgenstein my highest recommendation goes to P.M.S. Hacker, Wittgenstein's Place in Twentieth Century Analytic Philosophy. And the definitive anthology in the field, huge, comprehensive, and sophisticated, is The Oxford Handbook of the History of Analytic Philosophy, edited by Michael Beaney.

About the Author
Sir Hardy Amies died in 2003, but his legacy and style continues under his protégé Ian Garlant at Hardy Amies Plc. He opened his fashion house in 1945 and became Dressmaker by Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen. Famous for menswear and his keen eye for classic style, Amies had a regular fashion column in Esquire magazine.

An Informative Book

This book was originally published in 1964 and sometimes it sounds like it with references to "what will the Beatles wear in the future" and things like that. It was updated in 2007 but many of the references sound dated and were apparently left as-is. It's actually a sort of dictionary with alphabetical listings of style items. It could use more pictures. Photos of the fedora hats look rather ridiculous because they're oddly shaped but "modern" for the 60s. Most of the photos are obviously pictures of 1960s clothing...skinny trousers and even skinnier jackets. Many of the references, though, are timeless as good style is. Even though it has some tiny faults the book is very well written and witty. For instance, the author describes what a deerstalker hat is by saying "Sherlock Holmes can wear one. You can't." The author also does not like trouser cuffs (called "turn ups")! It's a nice reference book to have nonetheless and a nice read.

About the Author
Maxine Baca Zinn is professor emerita in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon. Her books include: Women of Color in U.S. Society (with Bonnie Thornton Dill) and Gender Through the Prism of Difference (with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner). She is the coauthor (with D. Stanley Eitzen) of Social Problems and Diversity in Families–both of which won McGuffey Awards for excellence over multiple editions from the Text and Academic Authors Association–and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds. She has served as president of the Western Social Science Association. In 2000, she received the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for expanding the horizons of sociology to include the study of women.

D. Stanley Eitzen is professor emeritus in sociology from Colorado State University, where previously he was the John N. Stern Distinguished Professor. He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Among his books are Social Problems, which was awarded the McGuffey Longevity Award for excellence over multiple editions in 2000 by the Text and Academic Authors Association, and Diversity in Families (both co-authored with Maxine Baca Zinn); Solutions to Social Problems: Lessons from Other Societies (with Graig S. Leeham); Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing Crisis (with Doug A. Timmer and Kathryn Talley); Sociology of North American Sport (with George H. Sage); and Fair and Foul: Rethinking the Myths and Paradoxes of Sport. He has served as the president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and as editor of The Social Science Journal.

Barbara Wells is associate professor of sociology at Maryville College, where she is also chair of the Division of Social Sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is co-author of Diversity in Families (with Maxine Baca Zinn and D. Stanley Eitzen). Her research and publishing has centered on marriage, rural families, structural transformation and family life, and Latino families. She is presently working on a book manuscript on the work and family lives of Mexican American women who are daughters and granddaughters of immigrant farm workers.
