Odd book...

Not the typical Little Golden Book storyline. It's just odd. Each page contains a 4 line poem, few of which have anything to do with saying please and thank you. I was hoping more for instruction to the reader on how and why to say please and thank you. Not so much.

I was a little disappointed - because I though it would be more of a "story" and not the poems. My students are ages 3-5, & most of the poems were "above" them - but I was able to use a few during our "Manners Week" at school

mostly wonderful but...

Most of the poems are nice and the illustrations are vivid and interesting. My only two problems are the poem about the dirty pig girl and the sad crocodile. The last lines of the dirty pig girl poem basically say that people should not have to look at you unless you are clean and neat. The sad crocodile poem is even worse, with his friends running away from him and not wanting to talk to him because he is 'always sad'.

In my opinion, these are not lessons I want to teach my children. When reading this to my children, I take the opportunity to reinforce empathy and concern for others instead of disapproval because others are not conforming.

Errors and omissions in this material

Has nobody else noticed that there are errors and omissions in this book and MyMathLab package? I purchased this for my high-school age daughter to take an online College Algebra course and she has been completely disillusioned with this product. In just the first section, the only time they mention a rule regarding Union and Intersection is in Objective 1.7. However, on the quiz #5 there is a "Solve the Polynomial" (which is not a Compound Inequality) and guess what? You have to utilize the rule from 1.7! Nowhere in the Polynomial Inequalities does it say that the rules of a Compound Inequality can be used. Yet the Polynomial Inequalities are discussed in Objective 1.6.

Another error was the tabulation for utilizing the brackets and parentheses. On the quiz one of the questions needs to have both brackets and parentheses. Well, the way the box is set up, the bracket and parentheses are the same size, so no matter what way you try to type it in, it doesn't work out to be the correct answer.

The format is this: read about a concept, try to do a particular type of problem, hit the HINT button (and you will be doing so continually) to try to solve the problem, do the homework, have a quiz, and move on.

We were so optimistic that this product and new technology would be a great improvement over traditional textbook learning. Yes, it does make the student sit through and solve the problem, but the bottom line is that it's a poor way to learn.

Back to the drawing board for this one.

I could learn more math from a spelling book!

The author does not go into detail about a single problem. He instead lists random rules for various operations and then leaves you in the dark as where to take it from there. It seems he assumes that you already completely know the subject and aren't in a college algebra class because you've never taken it before.

There are no explanations of how algebra works. Absolutely none. Instead, the book emphasizes rote memorization. Therefore, when one works through the homework, one might have an idea about how something is supposed to go, but no real suggested process of thought for completing it or why certain answers are correct and others are not - you're either right or wrong, with no lesson as to how one successfully solves the problem.

The textbook is no help either. Whenever I try to solve a problem and look up the operation in the textbook, either the "solution" given to me is so cursory and simple as to be downright laughable, or the book will simply say "Watch the video on the website". I shouldn't have to open up a new window, go to another page, and wait for a video to load every time I want more information.

In short this is one of the worst textbooks I've used at any grade level. I heartily suggest to mathematics instructors to put serious thought into what books they require for a course and choose one besides this.

This is a great workbook for anyone taking the Math 111 class online. It follows along with online textbook. Lots of sample problems so you don't have to write problems off computer.

Very good book. Although I think this book is mainly aimed for researchers, it can be also considered as a great help to clinicians who want to dig into hemodynamics. I've found it very useful.

Short but very good

This is a must-have book for clinicians who are fond of hemodynamics and arterial mechanics. The only drawback of the book is not being so comprehensive. Nonetheless, i strongly recommend it. And i also recommend amazon.com not taking into account complains about delivery issues, as in this example. A customer had given only one star to this book because of delivery problems, but there is nothing this book could do about it. I give 4 stars, if page number is doubled in the next edition, i will definitely give 5 stars.

One of the Great Classics, Finally back in Print

Rejoice, origami lovers of the world: Harbin's "Secrets of Origami" is back on the shelves. One of the first of my 40+ origami books, the old, battered, early 70s hardcover still holds a place of honor on my shelf. This is one of the best origami books EVER published. For the beginner, it opens the door to a wonderful array of simple to complex models, for the advanced folder, it provides a survey of the best Western folding from that formative period of 1960s. Fred Rohm, Adolfo Cerceda, Ligia Montoya - these are names that must NEVER fade from the annals of origami. Buy this book. Use this book. Treasure this book. Very few like this have been printed before or since.

Fantastic!

When I was tiny, PBS was local, and small, and almost as new as TV broadcasting. One of my favorite hosts taught Sumi-e and Origami. By the time I was five I could paint a decent horse and fold cranes, water-bombs, boats, and a bunch of others. I don't paint that well any more, and rarely get around to folding paper, but it was crafts and arts such as those that are the foundation of my being.

And this lovely work has been my origami bible since I originally got it in hardback, lo these many years ago -- around 1971 or so. Some of the folds are brilliant, some exceedingly difficult to do well (no lack in the instructions -- there's Art in some of the details!) and some simple. The one I remember feeling accomplished with was Fred Rohm's "It's Magic" -- a rabbit standing on a cube, all out of one piece of paper. After many months, lots of paper, and failed attempts, I finally got adept at it -- and I still can't imagine how he figured it out!

I forgot how to do this fold year's ago, but there are some examples of my attempts in private collections, and I get to visit once in a while. Maybe it's odd to be proud of a little bit of folded paper? Maybe. At one time I could manage "It's Magic" out of the liner paper from a pack of cigarettes -- that ends up at about an inch tall, when all's said and done.

So anyway... last Christmas I had an extra passel of kids to gift, and decided to make the gifts more or less unified... and the one family with three youngin's and not much money got a bunch of origami papers and some books, peaking at the Dover Press edition of this wonderful collection.

This may not be the best book to learn the essentials from, nor the most unified or complicated, or the greatest folds or largest scope, but it's dear to my heart, and I will always heartily recommend it in any collection.

Reall good and more than just a romance

I have to admit that this isn't the time of book I would normally pick up. I also don't know how it compares to other Erotica titles considering that I don't read very much erotica. I found the sex scenes to be far better than what appears in the Anita Blake series and more on par with Jacqueline Carey's historical fantasy, just without the bondage bit.

I was very surprised by this book, I must admit. It wasn't at all which I thought it would be (some weird beastial sex mash up thing. I actually was cringing when I "brought it. But I thought, it's free so no risk). The story, however, is a nice retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, admitting with a few sex scenes between people who actually love each other.

What I really like is the fact that Nicole Dreadful really knows her tale. If you have read the various French versions, you will see them reflected here, as well as hints of McKinley and Disney. Dreadful updates the tale - the family is close and the sister not evil - but she also deals with what critics believe the original tale to be about. The theory is that the original story was about finding happiness or lessening fear on behalf of the women who were facing arranged marriages. That it is, in part, leaving one family and joining another, of losing fear of sex. This idea of the fear of sex is what Dreadful focuses on and what makes this short story rise above the all too common romance retellings. What Dreadful explores is coming to terms not all with sexuality in general, but your own. I got this for free, but for intended to buy the next in the series. Very good.

Bad....

This pales in comparison to any other rendition I have read thus far (excluding the version I just rated for those following my progress).

The characters are flat, the sex isn't all it's cracked up to be, and the plot was practically butchered.

The story plot mostly runs parallel to Robin McKinley's "Beauty" for the first 70%, though with a few changes here and there. Time flew quickly, so one chapter lasts around a week, and then the time flies by months a time, next thing you know, it's been a year.

There was no incentive for Beauty to come back when she leaves the first time, but she does and starts picturing the Beast kissing her?

In the opening, you find out Beauty is an illegitimate child born of a mistress, but that fact is ignored the rest of the novel.

It didn't hold together, is what I'm saying....

I like the fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast, so I downloaded this to get a different spin. Since I found it in the romance section, I figured it would be an erotic spin, but it didn't quite make it there. If you're going to put an adult spin on a timeless story, it seems to me the characters of that story need to act like adults. The whole time I was reading it, I felt as if Beauty was a small child, though an age was never given. And I can't figure out why the whole Elliot thing was even written. I guess it was just confusing for me more than anything else.
