A heart warming story! I cried, but they were happy tears for the happy ending, and a story full of hope and courage

Wow!! Thanks to Kindle, I was able to download the book at about one in the morning, and it's now seven in the morning. I have not read a book in one sitting, or in one night for years!

People who saw the ABC interview with Diane Sawyer saw how warm and lovely this young lady is, and her book is like the interview but a hundred times warmer and more personal.

Jaycee's story is refreshing in that it's written by her, and not from a co-author. Much of the book are pages and pages taken from the actual journal entries she wrote while in her backyard prison. You can tell that her journal entries read in much same way as the rest of the book, so in a sense, the entire book is a continuation of her journaling and her ongoing mission in life to help others. For example, it's hard to tell when you're reading from her old journal entries from her more current writings of when she's authoring this book. It's really all one voice, and you definitely get a feel for how her voice resonates through.

Some readers on comment sections of news sites have mentioned they don't want to read the book due to graphic scenes being portrayed. Yes, these scenes are there, but written in a very mature way that I think people should really read. The book doesn't focus on these scenes, as rather the book focuses on simply sharing her story and conveying her sense of hope that's still beaming today. But the sexual abuse scenes are important to all of America as they describe horrifying sexual acts that often go by generic terms like 'rape' and 'molestation.' But what do those mean? Jaycee paints a much clearer picture, and in doing so, acts as the voice for all the victims of sexual abuse that can't share their story.

In America, sexual abuse is something that gets pushed under the rug, or punished. It's like there's no in between. Jaycee didn't know what the word rape meant while the act was being done to her, and I remember when I was 11 (I was also born in 1980 like Jaycee), I didn't know what the word rape meant either. I don't think I learned what the word meant until I was 13 or 14. Perhaps if more people learn about sexual abuse, and what it actually entails, then more can be done to protect innocent victims. And more importantly, when people realize what goes on behind closed doors of rapists, perhaps there won't be parole after just a few years for somebody who had already raped a woman for eight hours straight in a warehouse. Jaycee does an excellent job showing how her captor is a repeat offender, one that therapy cannot solve. Jaycee goes on to describe the failure of the therapists that her captor visited, and how they enabled him more than anything by allowing him to make excuses rather than be accountable for his behavior.

With all this being said, this book is probably not for young teenagers to read by themselves, as Jaycee shares vivid accounts of sexual abuses that happened to her; abuses she didn't even know the names for at the time. Cautiously I note, the entire book would be a great one for a parent and teenager to read and discuss together, with parental guidance on parts of the book that are tough to read or perhaps need proper perspective put into place. (Parents, you must read the book first, as you're the one to judge if the book is appropriate or not for your teenager). In my opinion, I think it's a subject that needs to be talked about more, even if it's difficult to read, but of course, that's up to parental discretion.

The only part I found that was hard to read in the book were the journal entries that talk about her thoughts and reactions to her captor's ongoing talk about Angels and how her captor believed the Angels control people. I don't know how many pages in the regular book, but it was a few pages on the Kindle. While it's tough to read, it illuminates just how unimaginably tougher it would be to live in that kind of manipulative situation on a daily basis.

What's also tough but enlightening to read is how much compassion she has for all the animals she cared for. Through all the events taking place upon her rescue, she even asks a couple officers if they can check on her animals and make sure they're okay, at which time the officers made sure to find them and get them temporary foster homes. The irony that develops through her selfless caring often mirrored her own reality: For example, Jaycee starts feeling really badly about one of her cats being locked up with her all the time, and feeling guilty for wanting the cat's company, she shares how a shed is no place for a cat. Yet she never shows any kind of self-pity on her own situation...all you see is your strength and courage.

I just can't believe these things happened to an 11 year old girl. You really get a sense into the manipulation of the captors (I refuse to say their names) and how through the horror of everything, Jaycee completely shines light throughout her memoir. It's like there's not even a 'hate' bone in her body -- she's an inspiration to us all; that love and hope conquers no matter. And the best thing is that the entire memoir is written so warmly, it's like Jaycee is sharing her story with you directly at the dinner table. And she goes on to share, now that she and her family are free, something very important to her: The simple daily act of cooking great foods and eating at the dinner table.

One last thing, in her journal entries she mentions her goals and plans for her future once she becomes free -- so many of them she's actually doing!

A tale of survival and pain

The first thing you need to know about Jaycee Dugard's book, is it is indeed a very difficult thing to read. It is a beautifully written, pull no punches account of the 18 years she spent in captivity with a very sick man, Phillip Garrido.

In a note from the author at the beginning of the book, Dugard explains that she wrote the book to attempt to convey the overwhelming confusion she endured during her years in captivity and to begin to unravel the damage that was done to she and her family. She chronicles her experience with brutal honesty. She writes about missing her mother and worrying that she will never see her again. Her dependence upon her kidnapper grows the more he isolates her from the world. For long periods of time he was the only other human being that she saw.

As you can tell from the Table of Contents, she spares no detail. You witness her physical and psychological transformation from a scared child held against her will to a woman who bears his children and runs a business with him until she is discovered. This truly is an exploration of her past. As profound as this book is in its horrific detail, it is not a triumphant, feel-good story. Other than her rescue, don't expect many warm fuzzies from this one.

If Jaycee's book interests you, I Love Yous Are for White People: A Memoir (P.S.) is another you'll undoubtedly want to read. Amazing to see people triumph over such adversity, and retell their stories so brilliantly.

inspiring ... far more compelling than I expected

This is a beautiful book.

What I have come to understand is that this is not a book about a kidnapping. This is a book about a spiritually gifted woman navigating her way through a life marked by deeply moving events. I am humbled by what I have read.

Ms Dugard is able to continue down a path of personal growth under the most constrained circumstances. The journal entries from her captivity, both as a child and later as an adult, reveal the amazingly positive energy she carries within her. She has the capacity for self-reflection at a young age, even though she is denied any personal autonomy. Later, she is able to build a semblance of a normal life for her children, home schooling them with her own curriculum despite only having a 5th grade education. She plants a garden, cares for her animals, even manages a business. All of this while enduring the constant abuse of a hyper-controlling, drug-addicted psychopath.

I am deeply inspired by her ability to keep pouring love out into the world despite being treated so horridly. Rather than turn away to some dark place, Ms Dugard performs a kind of spiritual judo, reflecting back love and compassion on the animals in her care, the children she's struggling to raise and the distant memory of her mother. She is able to resist the temptation to spew forth hatred upon the perpetrators of her abuse. Instead, she lets it go and moves on to a better place.

Frankly, I'm a bit ashamed that my initial interest in this book was based on sensationalist media coverage of the events surrounding her rescue. I was expecting to learn more about her captors and what kind of person would commit such a horrendous crime. After finishing the book, I've realized that don't care about them. Instead, I've learned something about myself: that I never need give up hope. No situation requires that I compromise myself or my beliefs. I can see now experiences in my own life where I was sucked in by the spiritual traps that Ms Dugard successfully navigated around for 18 years. I have a new role model to look up to.

Ms Dugard is living proof that "life can start over." I am indebted to her for a new understanding of those words.

Life, death, God and computers

A great book that I first read almost 20 years ago. Swigart takes you on a surreal trip through the Silicon Valley of the late seventies and through ancient Sumeria. Poking fun at life, death, God and Computers, I recommend it for anyone with a warped sense of humour

I read Mr. Swigart's great sci-fi novel: "The Time Trip," because I wanted to see how it compared to my own sci-fi novel: "Time Trip on a Moebius Strip." Even though his novel was nothing like my own, I was completely amazed by his writing...Can this man write! His story is way out...He has this brillant computer scientist teleported to ancient Mesopotamia, 2642 B.C., looking for his wife who had committed suicide in a microwave oven, believe it or not...He then meets up with his wife in a former incarnation, who doesn't even know him, and who is working as a temple prostitute. She then introduces him to of all people, the king "Gilgamesh" who becomes his best friend...They have many adventures together...What happens after that you will have to read the book to find out....If you like sci-fi novels by Kurt Vonnegut, then the novels of Mr. Rob Swigart are right up your alley....

Katie Weber broke Jamie Babcock’s heart when she left for Hollywood to follow her dream. Now she is back in Portland, but Jamie is afraid to have his heart broken by her again.

I have been anxiously awaiting Katie and Babs’ story, and I was not disappointed. Heck I was crying only a few pages into the book. I’m pretty sure that was a record for me.

Babs had always been my favorite Portland Storm character. In my opinion, you cannot get much better than Jamie Babcock. He is such a great guy; you want to see the best for him. He was recently made team captain. Everyone seems to believe in him but himself. He has grown so much throughout this series. Plus, he is completely dedicated to Katie.

Katie is a great heroine. She is a cancer survivor who does not give up. She is a strong individual that goes after her dreams but recognizes when her priorities change.

I love the cats in this story. Blackbeard cracked me up. I have a cat that used to like to sit on my shoulder as a kitten, so I could relate. They made for some good comic relief.

I appreciated that Katie’s father, David Webber (Webs), was trying to play matchmaker. It was an interesting turn of events since Taking a Shot (book 2.5).

I thought it was great that a few characters from the new spin off series, Tulsa Thunderbirds, made an appearance in the story. I cannot wait to read that series.

Catherine Gayle did a phenomenal job with the plot. She covers real-life issues and delivers it in a believable manner. Dropping Gloves was a heartwarming story that made me feel just about every emotion possible. This is a book has made it to my favorites. A book I enjoyed so much I pretty sure I will reread multiple times.

Finally! Katie and Bab's story. I was so excited to get this and read it especially because I knew they would get their happy ending. I just wanted to know how. And again, Catherine Gayle does not disappoint. This book was a real tear jerker as many of her books are and I honestly can say it might be good to have tissues handy. I had a hard time putting Dropping Gloves down and I can tell you that this book is well worth the money!

One of my favorite things is how little updates are dropped here and there about different characters. Sometimes the news makes you sad because they characters are no longer with the Portland Storm but they are with the Tulsa Thunderbirds so that's a bit of hope as Catherine Gayle is writing this spin off series.

I also enjoy Catherine's writing style. It's one of the few times I enjoy first person perspective. I'm not sure if it's just the characters voices or what exactly it is but I do enjoy it.

There are happy moments to take away from the sad but Catherine Gayle makes sure that it is kept pretty realistic. Life isn't always happy and that is portrayed in this book. Although they do get their happy ending.

Dropping Gloves was well worth their wait and I cannot wait for more of the Portland Storm and also the Tulsa Thunderbirds!

If you have ever talked to me (in person or social media) you know that I adore Catherine Gayle! Her Portland Storm series is the one I recommend more than any other book, ever! And this book? It's one that I've anticipated since the very first time I picked up one of her books!

Jamie Babcock is the ideal book boyfriend in so many ways. And Katie Weber? Well, we've watched her grow up, starting with her high school crush on Babs! And now? She's back - in her own book. And let me tell you, from the very first page? Catherine Gayle will blow you away.

This is possibly one of the hardest books I've ever written a review for. It's one that you NEED to read, but it's also one that I can't tell you anything about because even the slightest hint will give away major SPOILERS!!! (And I'm anti-spoiler!)

So as I've said since my first Catherine Gayle review? She'll make you wish you could fall in love all over again, and she'll make you contemplate buying stock in Kleenex brand!

(I really wish this review could be longer. The feels are heavy, the emotions high and the swoons are many! So grab the tissues, your favorite eReader and a cup of coffee, because you'll be up all night!)

Whatever you may think of her writing, Ana�s Nin was definitely a femme fatale. Henry Miller was, he claimed, the "happiest man alive." Together, Nin and Miller created a literary language for sexual fulfillment; she in a diary whose original form still remains unpublished, he in novels banned in both the United States and England until court cases in the early 1960s permitted their publication and turned Miller into something Nin had already achieved: the status of a cult hero.
Nin and Miller met in Paris in 1931. Miller, an aspiring novelist, wanted to meet the banker's pretty wife who had sung the praises of D.H. Lawrence and whose books had been deemed "pornography" outside of France. Neither Nin nor Miller, at that point, had published much. Their mutual interest, as they freely admit, was in sex and in each other and, consequently, they began a long affair.
It was during this affair that both Nin and Miller produced their finest writing--the writings that would eventually become Nin's two diaries and her novel, House of Incest, as well as Miller's Tropic of Cancer and Black Spring. Each believed in, and nurtured, the others genius and Miller wrote that Nin's diary would take its place "beside the revelations of St. Augustine, Petronius, Abelard, Proust and others."
Miller, only forty-one, but already somewhat down-and-out, fascinated the twenty-nine year old Nin, whose vague yearnings filled the many pages of the diary she had been keeping since the age of ten. "He's a man who makes life drunk. He is like me," she mused. Nin and Miller, however, were not alike. One of their most essential differences was a difference typical between men and women--Nin censored herself, while the world censored Miller.
Published in 1963, Nin's diary caused a literary sensation. It was begun as a letter to her father, a man who abandoned the family when Nin was only ten, and it remained intensely private. Revised into frequent distortions, the diary was a record of a compulsion to conceal as much as of a quest for feminine fulfillment. A mixture of fact, fantasy and calculated lies, Nin's editor asserts that the diary nevertheless presents a "psychological" truth. Kate Millett hailed Nin as "the mother of us all" and the women's movement immediately embraced her writings. Author Erica Jong said that no woman had told "the story of women's sexuality" more honestly than had Nin.
Despite the praise, if we read between the lines, while still observing Nin's frenetic whirl from bed to bed, we come to realize that she was really never satisfied. Her insatiable appetite aside, Nin was, at heart, a prudish libertine. Her childhood molestation by her father, whom she, herself, seduced as an adult a year after meeting Henry Miller, seems to have contributed greatly to her private inhibitions. Although she flitted from bed to bed she sadly confessed, "I am hellishly lonely." Instead of sex, Nin longed for "what I give Henry: this constant attentiveness."
In the "Black Lace Laboratory," as Miller's apartment was dubbed, Nin and Miller conducted literary and erotic experiments, prompting Nin to write him a thinly disguised warning to herself, "Beware just a little of your hypersexuality!" Toward the end of his life, unable to write about women except as prostitutes, Miller claimed not to know what the sexual revolution was about, saying that he had always loved and honored women. Nin agreed, saying that Miller was a romantic, rather than a rake. At eighty, Miller confessed that far too many people engaged in sex without love.
Basking in the warmth of Nin's caresses, her skilled editing of his work, and the material possessions she lavished upon him, Miller wrote prolifically and with a rare genius. Eventually, his romance with Nin faded (or warmed) into friendship, but the legacy of their literary teamwork remained: In 1974, Nin was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. The Los Angeles Times names her Woman of the Year in 1976, the same year Henry Miller received France's Legion d'honneur. The 1990 movie, Henry and June is a chronicle of Miller's affair with Nin, which later became a triangle involving Miller's wife, June.
Nin and Miller have become cultural icons. Nin is the focus of women's study courses as well as being included in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Miller and his work need no comment. Although both Nin and Miller were pioneers of free speech and sexual freedom, and both helped to forge a new literature and a new culture, the ultimate emptiness of their lives, with its attendant lack of depth and meaning point to the futility of their attempt to wrest security and happiness from sexuality alone.

Enlightening. . .

What a provocative read! Having read all of Nin's diaries and fiction, I felt that this book filled in the missing gaps of her life. I came away admiring her perseverence in achieving the goal of publishing her writing. I felt I finally understood how she and Miller drifted apart after having had such a burning, passionate, intense beginning to their long love affair. Alas, they were both mere mortals just as you and I! If you love Nin or Miller, you'll be thoroughly entertained by this book.

This is your wake up call...

I have been deeply concerned about so-called 'environmentalism' for some time now, about what I could sense was an 'anti human' mindset that seemed to occupy so many of these people.

I watched some YouTube video's where this work is discussed by Webster Tarpley and thought that I would obtain this book myself and read it.

My copy of this book arrived a few weeks ago and I spent several weekends reading every word, chapter and recommendation.

I must admit, this is one of the most deeply disturbing, horrifying texts I have ever read.

Simply put, this book describes a future vision for the world that now exists within China; a world of forced sterilisations, forced abortions, eugenics, incredibly powerful central governments, carbon taxes, poisoned food and water supplies pumped full of highly toxic sterilisation agents...the list goes on and on. The book reads like some crazed Nazi fantasy, what is even more horrifying is that it was written and openly published in academia by people such as Holden whom now hold such highly esteemed positions in government and academia.

The environmental movement has morphed into a hard-core Malthusian Eugenics movement that sees humanity as the ultimate enemy of the planet, something to be managed and - where necessary - culled.

If you have ever wanted to know the deepest thoughts of the environmental movement, then this book lays them all bare for you to read.

This book is your wake up call.

Obama loves me?

It staggers me how people can be apologists for this filthy peice of scum Holdren, and his best pal Obama. There is no overpopulation problem you idiot commenters! In most nations the reproductive rate is well below what is nessicary to sustain a population. If you truly believe we have an overpopulation problem, do us a favor and start with removing yourselves from the equation. That shouldn't be a problem right, I mean if it's such a big issue? This agenda is well under way, with GMO's, fluoride in the water, vaccines (watch Bill Gate's "innovating to zero" he says, "if we do a really good job" then references abortions and vaccines). And you idiots, like the commenter talking about how Holdren was a "young acidemic" when he wrote this love letter to Mengele. Do you actually believe when Holdren references poor gene pools he isn't talking about you as well? We're all in this together you're not part of the 0.1%, Ted Turner says "95% of people should be killed" that's you, and everyone you know and ever will know. The truth of the matter is that people like Gates, Holdren, Turner, Sanger, Royal family, Rothchild's aren't only degenerate but have been inbred for many generations. When a horribly inbred immoral individual such as Holdren observes the tenacity and will to thrive that exists in us "low born individuals" they conflagrate with evny. As a result if that envy, we get to read treatises on criminal insanity such as the Democratic party's seminal "Eco Science". Believe what you will, I always recomend one to always follow your instincts as I do. If you continue to believe Obama loves you and cares about your well being you need only read the writing of the man who's "Council he looks forward to".

Eugenics under new names: malthusianism and ecology

Here in Brazil, I tried to read online this trash-book. This book support not just abortion, but its imposition to women with undesirable characters; mainly poverty. Beyond doubt this is a Eugenics' book, book but Eugenics has new names in this book: malthusianism and ecology. In this trash-book, "Inferior race" is called "over population" and Eugenics is called malthusianism and ecology.
