Excellent Historic Design Reference Book

I am an artist blacksmith doing architectural work. I use this book frequently to help with authentic design. It is filled with many good photographs and drawings. The text is helpful for anyone desiring to know more about how and why the fine ironwork of the past came to be.

This book was intended for an art student

I was some what dissapointed with this book because I found the author too worried about filling text rather than getting to the point. I am a welder and really was looking for a book that discussed reasons, good examples, and how to create wrought iron design. I was not looking for a history lesson. If you are looking for history on the art of Spanish, Italian design etc. and where they were used,this would be the book for you.

Okay. You got me. I confess to be being a Zappa fanatic for a very long time. At the time of this writing it will be forty-six years to be exact. Frank’s music has been one of the most important components in my life from the first time I heard Freak Out! in 1966, both musically and for steering me in the right direction politically and in a sense, socially. Though I’ll admit that I was heading down that soon to be ostracized path of resistance before the Zappa prodding incident, but Frank seemed to be there encouraging me to do so, which was a welcome relief. Thank you, Frank Zappa. I’ve been writing articles, along with conducting a few interviews about the man and his music for over twenty years. Some have been posted on several sites on the web that no longer exist, while others have been sent in private emails to friends. I decided that I would write some additional articles and collect turn these collected writings into a book. You will not be regaled with the listing of endless concert dates, personnel and track listings, nor can I share intimate stories from our childhood together (it never happened). There will be no claims that I appeared on stage with the man, and I would be hard pressed to call him a friend. You will not find a chronological history of the Mothers of Invention nor intimate details of the many bands that followed. There will be no contextual analysis of anything. If you don’t know who Wild Man Fischer is you should read any number of the other Zappa books to catch up. This book is for the hardcores who have already garnered all of the available information about Frank past and present, and don’t necessarily need to hear another version. The stories found within are simply my personal reflections (or confessions if you prefer), of my adventures in and around the world of Zappa. And I have a few. Hope you enjoy them.

About the Author
H.T. Brown lives in Laguna Niguel, California with his wife (they were childhood sweethearts), and one of the largest Frank Zappa music and memorabilia collections in the world. He became a professional musician (drums), at the age of 16, and finished out his musical career by playing exclusively with Zoogz Rift from 1988 until his last project in 2001. In the interim he pretended to be an executive in the music industry working for Rhino Records for almost 20 years. While at Rhino he compiled Beat The Boots 1 & 2 for Frank Zappa, which resulted in the largest export sales the company had seen at the time. He is currently working on another book or two and prefers to be called “Tom”.

The appreciation of a true Frankophile

Tom Brown has written what I believe to be the only truly great personal appreciation of the work of Frank Zappa, and it's wonderful stuff - worthy of a sequel, which I'd happily buy! Some of the chapters collect Tom's earlier writings, but all are updated to reflect the current state of the Zappa Cattle-Log. (Fellow Zappa fanatics will get that in-joke, though rural fans might know that cattle produce pies, not logs!) Anyway, to get to the point, Tom is a lifelong resident of the LA region, and a lifer fan of Frank Zappa, the latter a state with which I completely identify. But, living in and around the City of Angels, and having experience within the horror that is known as the Music Business, Tom has some unique insights. Tom is in particular the guy from Rhino Records who personally selected the bootleg LPs that Frank and Rhino used to make the celebrated Beat the Boots collections. The tales of intrigue behind those projects alone are worth the price of this book! Also in his time at Rhino, Tom got to make a visit to Frank's underground vault, where his unreleased archival recordings are stored. For an FZ fan, that's like an audience with the Pope - or even better, a chance to peruse the Pope's personal porn collection! As a friend of one of Frank's best bass players, Tom also got to spend an evening with the Maestro, and that account is probably my favorite part of the book. But I'd have to say the chapter on Flo and Eddie, with whom Tom served as drummer for some concerts and sessions, is truly hilarious. In sum, this is an absolute must for fellow Zappa lifers, and maybe even for those who don't know the great man's work all that well. It's the story of an almost life-consuming love of one of the great bodies of music that the twentieth century had to offer. In a single word, DAMN!

Fear & Loathing On Woodrow Wilson Drive

Tom Brown's second book is a collection of detailed and funny stories describing how his life often intersected with that of his music idol, Frank Zappa. Tom is well known in the music fandom (i.e. tape trading) community as one of the most passionate and knowledgeable Zappa collectors in the world. And being an L.A. musician himself as well as a record company employee, Tom was able to gain access to the composer's inner circle on a number of occasions. So, unlike other Zappa books that present the history and analyze the music, this one is unique in that it gives you first-hand impressions from a die-hard fan's point of view, like describing the awe of stepping into the Zappa household for the first time to inventory the tape archives for Rhino Records; Or when he was invited to tag along with his friend Arthur Barrow to hear Frank's new Synclavier pieces. Among other things, you really get a sense of how Frank held court in a casual environment. One chapter details Tom's brief time playing drums (and hanging out) with Flo & Eddie. It also includes plenty of anecdotes by other friends who were at one time or another employed by the maestro. And it's all presented in a funny, wry, no-holes-barred style reminiscent of the late great Hunter S. Thompson. If you're a Zappa fan yourself, you will find this book extremely entertaining.

Fascinating insider tales from a long-term Zappa fanatic!

Tom has followed up his outstanding book of memoirs ("Summer of Love, My Ass") with a lively, entertaining collection of memories, observations and opinions that no self-respecting Zappa nut can afford to miss. Given Tom's perspective as one with personal connections to the late composer, his book is full of engaging, often outright delightful stories that will doubtlessly tickle and stimulate all those of us who could never get enough of the highly singular Mr. Z. There's no need to articulate the potential readers for this book: you know who you are. And you're gonna enjoy it!

The " granddaddy " of all STEVENSON'S biographies , "LIFE OF ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON " (1901) was written by Louis cousin:Graham Balfour.Although hagiographic, is still important and readable.

"Indispensable" Biography

The Robert Louis Stevenson Web Site recommends this work as an "indispensable" biograpy. It does not disappoint. Anyone who wishes to understand Stevenson cannot go wrong with a biography written by Graham Balfour, a cousin of RLS. Like all good primary sources, it gives the reader a fresh and personal "you-are-there" feeling. It does not pretend to be a critique of Stevenson's works; rather, it shows Stevenson's life-long struggle between his illness and his aspirations. Using his own personal knowledge of the family and drawing upon correspondence from RLS, Balfour has provided us with a rare glimpse into the life of a man who was rarely comfortable without a pen in his hand. With nary a dull page in the book, this biography makes a great starting point for high school and college students who would like the whole story of a man whose work was vast in scope including tales of high adventure, tales of the macabre, travel journals on three continents, delightful verses for children, and the most memorable prayers in the English language. Highly recommended.

Well researched, well presented, and interesting

This book takes the reader back to a time when the thinking on all sides was different and when all the countries involved pursued their beliefs with determination though the beliefs forced them all to endure a horrible conflict. We see it in an especially interesting light now after the incredible progress and the development of true democracy in the South and the economic collapse and governmental horrors of the North. Truman's firmness with restraint look very wise now, although Vietnam shows that every situation holds its own mysteries.

Yowzers! China has a mind of its Own!

Ah, now here is an excellent book on the Korean War which meets several standards that make it required reading. First and foremost it contains evidence which places the role China played in the Korean War in new light. Second it is well written. Third, it manages to place the Korean War in the context of the larger cold-war/northeast asian conflict between powers without also getting sidetracked into every widening spirals of intrigue between European allies, Russia, China, and the USA. Finally the book is pleasant to read, which is not an easy accomplishment for a text that has so much new material to offer on a historical subject.

The insights begin right with the introduction, when it becomes clear that Jian has a more mature approach to the War and China's role in it. He assumes that China's motives were determined by the Chinese themselves: they were not, as many western analysts assume even to this very day, a `response to American actions' and initiatives. There was much more at stake than just `preserving the Sino-Korean border!' China had just re-emerged as a world power; it had aligned itself with Moscow; and it was anxious to appear in the vanguard of the socialist revolution. Given these roles Jian argues there was "little possibility that China's entrance into the Korean War could have been averted."
Chinese nationalism was rooted in part on their feeling of `cultural superiority:' something we Americans should understand, as we feel the same way. China was, in those 1940s and early 1950s, re-emerging as a world power as it finally won its civil war with Chiang Kai Shek and re-established its territorial (Tibet) integrity and of course, sought to finish the job with Taiwan. Their task was to oppose (American) imperialism everywhere in the world, going so far as to neither trade nor accept aid from such nations. China was in no rush to be `recognized' by foreign nations, nor did they acknowledge diplomatic initiatives and titles given by the old Guomindang regime.

China had to `prove to the Soviets that, while they were an independent Communist state' they were not `Titoists;' though the Chinese `leaned to one side' (Russia) in their dealing with the superpowers, Russia was willing to let China carry the ball with respect to Asian revolutionary struggles. In a sense you might argue that Russia took responsibility for the European theatre and left Asia to the Chinese. The cooperation between Stalin and Mao with regard to Kim Il Sung's plans to attack the South, was discussed at length in Khruschev's memoirs. The author believes that Shi Zhe's account was more detailed: Mao held great reservations about Kim's plan, even though he felt Kim would proceed with the attack in any case.

China's approach in asia was based upon its conviction that the Maoist revolution (1) represented a break from imperialism; (2) that it would inevitably spread beyond China; (3) it was China's responsibility to assist these other peoples with their uprisings, and (4) countries such as Vietnam, Korea, and Taiwan were the areas where these conflicts would be waged. China's support of Ho Chi Minh against the French was a test case of this doctrine. And since Koreans had fought with the Communists against Chiang in the civil war, ties between the countries were so great that a `historian would have trouble explaining why the Chinese did NOT intervene' in Korea.

The outbreak of the war and American intervention was both a crisis and opportunity for China. They had expected war to breakout at one of 3 places (Korea, Taiwan, Indochina) anyway, and had downsized but strengthened their forces. They used the war domestically as part of a great mobilization to `Resist America and Assist Korea.' By the end of July the `Northeast Border Defense army' was in place. The Chinese followed the war closely and even successfully wargamed the In'chon landing, providing six reasons why that port would be preferable over Hungnam, Kunsan and others. Mao, upon hearing about MacArthurs' arrogance and stubbornness, stated "Fine! An arrogant enemy is easy to defeat!" Unfortunately Kim Il Sung was similarly arrogant and refused to pay attention to Chinese warnings about an In'chon landing. China was, in fact, rarin' to go into Korea by early August, but they had to rally the Communist party to their cause. In addition Russia had still to be consulted and North Korea's leader still felt he could do it on his own. After In'chon the crisis became more acute. Using global statements and diplomacy that was straight out of the playbook of the American right, China urged the Russians to support China's intervention in Korea: if Korea was to fall to American/Imperialist forces, other countries in Asia, and Manchuria, would be menaced next.

From the Chinese perspective-especially that of the Chinese soldier, marching in the bitter cold-it is a pity the Stalin now showed his true colors and reneged on his promise to provide the Chinese troops with ammunition, air and logistical support. China decided to go in anyway-proof again of the authors central theme, which is that China acted in its own interests, not those of allies or opponents-but still, the seeds for the Sino-Soviet split were sown in those early 1950s.

China took three bitter lessons from the Korean War. First, Russia and Stalin were no more to be trusted than those dastardly western imperialists. Second, conflicts with the west could be used to strengthen the legitimacy of their regime domestically by rallying troops and citizens to the anti-western cause. Third, Mao realized that it took more than massive human waves to win a war. American technology had cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Chinese. They would need advanced armaments, and an atomic bomb of their own.

An excellent book, one that brings to light new information from China's archives and revelations from Chen's personal interviews. Although it is to be expected that Chen's revelations about Stalin's machinations and Mao's agonizing decision would gain his book its good reputation, I appreciated his attempt to relate China's war effort to its internal political development. If the use of war to consolidate a post-revolutionary regime is unsurprising, as it should be, it helps when someone documents the steps and motives leading to war, just as Chen Jian has in this superb book.
It also helps the reader when the author writes as clearly and precisely as Chen.
