Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, by Scotty Bowers

Newly discharged from the Marines after World War II, Scotty Bowers arrived in Hollywood in 1946. Young, charismatic, and strikingly handsome, he quickly caught the eye of many of the town’s stars and starlets. He began sleeping with some himself, and connecting others with his coterie of young, attractive, and sexually free-spirited friends. His own lovers included Edith Piaf, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Cary Grant, and the abdicated King of England Edward VIII, and he arranged tricks or otherwise crossed paths with Tennessee Williams, Charles Laughton, Vincent Price, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, Gloria Swanson, Nol Coward, Mae West, James Dean, Rock Hudson and J. Edgar Hoover, to name but a few.

Full Service is not only a fascinating chronicle of Hollywood’s sexual underground, but also exposes the hypocrisy of the major studios, who used actors to propagate a myth of a conformist, sexually innocent America knowing full well that their stars’ personal lives differed dramatically from this family-friendly mold. As revelation-filled as Hollywood Babylon, Full Service provides a lost chapter in the history of the sexual revolution and is a testament to a man who provided sex, support, and affection to countless people.

Review
“I have known Scotty Bowers for the better part of a century. I’m so pleased that he has finally decided to tell his story to the world. His startling memoir includes great figures like Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Scotty doesn't lie—the stars sometimes do—and he knows everybody.”—Gore Vidal

“Mr. Bowers, 88, recalls his highly unorthodox life in a ribald memoir . . . [A] lurid, no-detail-too-excruciating account of a sexual Zelig who (if you believe him) trawled an X-rated underworld for over three decades without getting caught. . . . [A] lot of what Mr. Bowers has to say is pretty shocking. . . . Full Service at the very least highlights how sharply the rules of engagement for reporting celebrity gossip have changed. . . . [I]t’s much harder to keep details as salacious as the ones Mr. Bowers outlines under wraps.”—Brooks Barnes, New York Times

"A jaw-dropping firsthand account of closeted life in Hollywood during the '40s and '50s. The wholesome image of the postwar American family was acted, written, directed, and designed by people for whom such a life was never possible and Bowers writes about their pain and brilliance with the childlike wonder of Chauncey Gardiner. Turner Classic Movies will never quite look the same."—Griffin Dunne, Actor/Director

“[Scotty Bowers] made his reputation by sleeping with everyone in Hollywood who wasn’t actually Lassie, and now he tells all. If you ever suspected that Spencer Tracy was bisexual and Tyrone Power a coprophiliac, and if you happen to believe everything you read, here is all the testimony you require.”—Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

“[Q]uel scandale!”—Vanity Fair

“This handsome ex-Marine and his friendly gas station have long been alluded to in Hollywood memoirs. And now, at last, they go public.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“The book is like a 286-page gossip column from Hollywood’s golden age—it names all the names and spills all the secrets. Bowers was a . . . free-love advocate far ahead of his time who claimed Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Edith Piaf and the Duke of Windsor (to mention just a few) as lovers.”—W Magazine, “February’s Most Wanted”

“[A] tell-all book . . . .Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, George Cukor, Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh are among those named by Bowers, now 88. . . . Younger readers—at least those raised in the Internet and TMZ age—may find nearly as shocking the fact that the stories were squelched by studio publicists and remained largely under wraps back in the day.”—Chicago Tribune

“Connoisseurs of lurid tell-alls and the golden age of Hollywood will almost certainly be entranced by Full Service.”—The Atlantic Wire

“The Scotty I knew was a guy who always seemed to be enjoying his life working morning, noon and night, with never a gripe; always with a smile to greet you, and never with an axe to grind. After a lifetime in Hollywood, that’s a remarkable feat and its own kind of Zen.”—David Patrick Columbia, New York Social Diary

"They said he'd never talk — but at long last, the legendary Scotty Bowers has told his story, with all the honesty, compassion and insight that made him a confidant of movie stars, directors, billionaires, and politicians. Bowers knew Hollywood like no one else, invited behind closed doors to observe firsthand the true stories of America's dream factory. This is juicy, juicy stuff—but just as importantly, it's a seminal chapter of American popular culture that gives us a richer understanding of the people, times, and culture of Hollywood's Golden Age."—William J. Mann, author of Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn

"A picaresque romp that unabashedly uncovers long-hidden sexual scandals during Hollywood's golden years."—John Rechy, author of City of Night

“Delicious with every salacious detail . . . The photographs alone are worth the price of admission.”—Huffington Post

“Controversial . . . vivid . . . As well as a titillating catalogue of sexual intrigue, the book is designed to expose of the hypocrisy and fear that swirled beneath the industry's on-screen glamour and crafted wholesomeness. . . . [Bowers] dramatically describes the climate of fear in an era when he worked as a bartender at Hollywood parties while the LAPD vice squad were prowling the hills in their patrol cars looking for parties and opportunities to arrest the participants.”—The Guardian (UK)

“After five years maintaining that sex secrets of Tinseltown’s elite, at the age of 88, Bowers is revealing all in a sensational new memoir.”—The Daily Express (UK)

“Full Service opens the doors of the closeted, X-rated underworld of old Hollywood through three decades.”—The Daily Mail (UK)

“[Bowers] became the Mr. Fixit for screen icons who sought out the more lurid trappings of Tinseltown during its glory days. Wild affairs, gay romps and rampant prostitution were the order of the day and Bowers was the man they turned to for their salacious entertainment.”—The Daily Mirror (UK)

“Scotty Bowers—once a beacon of discretion—finally unveils the carnal peccadillos of many of the studio era’s biggest players. . . . For impromptu beach house read-a-loud moments . . . this book is a must.”—Lambda Literary

“[If] you're one of those people who still owns a vintage princess phone, watches Mad Men obsessively, and yearns to go back to a “simpler” time when men and women exchanged witty banter in mid-Atlantic accents instead of jumping into the sack, read Bowers’ book.”—Nerve.com

“[Full Service] is about to blow the door off of the Hollywood Closet. . . . Escandalo!”—Seattle Gay Scene

“None of us are ready for what appears to be the kickass Old Hollywood memoir of 2012: Scotty Bowers’s Full Service.”—AfterElton.com

Preface

Although I’m not a shy man I have always been reticent to reveal details about what I have done, mainly to respect the privacy of those whose lives have intersected with mine. But, if the truth be told, over the years many people have told me to write about my experiences and share them with others. A few decades ago my good buddy Tennessee Williams began writing his own account of my life but before it saw the light of day I told him to destroy it. Now, as I take stock of myself in my twilight years—I’ll be eighty-nine on my next birthday—I feel compelled to share my story.

I reached this decision not long ago as I was driving east along Hollywood Boulevard. I had been to see a friend in Westwood and I was on my way to one of the two houses I own to pick up my mail. It was a perfect Southern Californian summer afternoon. The traffic wasn’t too bad and my dog, Baby, happily bounded from one side of the rear seat to the other, thrusting her nose out of the windows. We passed Mann’s Chinese Theatre, where throngs of tourists gathered in the courtyard to gaze at autographs and handprints of their favorite stars enshrined in concrete. People dressed up as characters from a multitude of blockbuster movies wafted among the crowds. Farther along the block, visitors gathered in the forecourt of the Kodak Theatre to admire the grand gallery where, once every year, the famous red carpet welcomes stars to the Academy Awards presentation. The El Capitan Theatre across the road was a riot of twinkling lights and more surging multitudes. It was just another average day in Hollywood.

Even for me, after all these years, the very name of Hollywood conjures up images of a fantastic world of make-believe. It’s a world that throbs with energy, excitement, indulgence, even decadence. This is a crazy, zany, wonderful, topsy-turvy town sandwiched between a blistering desert and the vast Pacific Ocean. It has been my home for nearly seven decades. I have enjoyed a fabulous life here ever since I put down my roots following my discharge from the U.S. Marines at the end of World War II. I love this place and all the people in it. The story that I am going to tell could only have happened here. This is a gathering place of lost souls, of eccentrics, of people who don’t follow the mainstream of anything.

As my car purred along Hollywood Boulevard I crossed Highland Avenue. I glanced around and realized how much things have changed since the early days. The old clanging streetcars are long gone. The shows that run in places like the Pantages Theatre are very different from what they used to be. Buildings have come and gone. The sidewalk still shimmers with inlaid terrazzo and brass stars that honor the many talented people who have worked in the film, television, radio, and music industries. Where bejeweled and fur-clad women once strolled arm in arm with tall, handsome men in tuxedos, there are now mainly tourists during the day and, after sundown, drunks, drug pushers, and the homeless. I drove on for a couple of miles. The crowds thinned out until the sidewalks were empty. When I reached Van Ness Avenue I pulled over. As Baby’s face appeared over my shoulder she licked my ear. She was curious. Why had we stopped? Her wagging tail thudded against the seat behind me. How could I explain it to her? I tugged at her muzzle and stared at the intersection, now the site of major construction work.

A new fire station for the Los Angeles Fire Department was rising there. Like a floodgate suddenly opening, a million memories enveloped me. This very spot, this place where cranes, concrete mixers, and metal scaffolding now stand, is where it all began for me. A little gas station once occupied that corner. Shortly after I first got here I worked there as a young pump attendant. But it didn’t take me long to learn to do more than just pump gas. Through a series of extraordinary incidents I became enmeshed in a wild world of sexual intrigue the likes of which few people can even begin to imagine.

Over the years more Hollywood personalities secretly congregated at that little gas station than anywhere else in town. It was a scene that saw as much furious action as the busiest studio back lot. The place became a magnet for those in quest of carnal thrills and escapism of every kind. A cavalcade of movie stars and others were attracted to the station like the proverbial moth to a flame. I became the go-to guy in town for arranging whatever people desired. And everybody’s needs were met. Whatever folks wanted, I had it. I could make all their fantasies come true. No matter how outrageous or offbeat people’s tastes, I was the one who knew how to get them exactly what they were after. Straight, gay, or bi; male or female; young or old—I had something for everyone. The vice squad and the press were constantly lurking on the periphery, eagerly waiting to pounce. But I always managed to elude them.

The gas station was the portal that eventually took me into an exclusive world where high-class sex was everything. I’ve had many occupations during my life but, to be honest, what really drove me was a desire to keep people happy. And the way I did that was through sex. Arranging sexual liaisons for folks from all walks of life became my raison d’tre. When I first arrived here the stars were owned by the studios, which were heavily invested in them.

Naturally, they needed to protect their investments. But people still wanted to have sex. And I was there to help them get it. Also, you have to remember that there were lots of gay people working at the studios at the time. Those behind the camera could be more open in their private lives but the actors and major directors and producers had “morals” clauses in their contracts, which they would have violated by being openly known as gay or bisexual.

Eventually I changed jobs. I moved on from the gas station to become one of the busiest bartenders in Los Angeles. In that capacity I gained access to the inner sanctums of Hollywood royalty. I moved in the highest of circles. Nothing was out of bounds for me. Those were amazing, intoxicating days, wildly erotic and carefree. Such a time can never come again. The lusty activities and vagabond lifestyle we once enjoyed in this town were unique to our time.

As I sat in the car that summer afternoon with Baby I became aware of the passing of an incalculable number of years. I felt myself reminiscing about dear and wonderful friends, all long departed. Oh, Kate, Spence, Judy, Tyrone, George, Cary, Rita, Charles, Randolph, Edith, Vivien, I thought . . . where are you all now? Do you look down at me from wherever you are and chuckle as you watch me mulling over how our lives intersected? What should I make of all those incredible adventures we enjoyed together? What do you beautiful souls think of the nostalgia now welling up within me? Am I resurrecting moments from yesterday simply because I want to dust them off and discard them or because I want to burnish them more brightly and hold on to them more endearingly?

Baby licked my ear again and I came out of my reverie. I reminded myself that there weren’t only movie stars in my past. There were politicians, judges, bankers, doctors, industrialists, newspaper columnists, even kings and queens. Not all were rich and famous. There were also plain, regular men and women whose names I shall never be able to recall. But I knew them all. Intimately.

I started the car and drove off. I realized that wherever I look, the suburbs, the boulevards, the side streets, the studios, the nightclubs, the fancy homes in the hills, there is a sliver of my past in all of it. There is so much to recall. There are apparitions and memories of myself everywhere. My mind lazily ambled through endless mental files containing images of glamorous parties, of wild poolside orgies, of weekends in fancy hotels, of studio dressing rooms, of crowded sound stages, of dark places where bodies collided with electrifying vigor, of ghostly gatherings of gorgeous women and virile young men, of a magnificent variety of passionate sex of every kind.

Frankly, I knew Hollywood like no one else knew it.

Nothing left out and Plenty of Surprises
By Jeff Hanna
Somehow I was surprised that this was so well-written (although Scotty Bowers collaborated with Emmy Award-winning writer and documentary film director Lionel Friedberg). Bowers seems like a nice, charming guy with boundless energy, curiosity and a great appetite for life who seems to have never had the slightest hang-up about sex. Of course having killer good looks and body didn't hurt. An interesting subtext about how witnessing real horror at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima increased his desire to live life to its fullest after the war.
The book is overflowing with juicy, bizarre, often very surprising gossip which can be hilariously funny, sometimes sad, and frequently over-the-top salacious. All of the in-your-face sexuality and pathos is interesting because it involves people who were so idealized at the time - and some still are. Plenty of rumors are confirmed and legends shattered - hence the anger and disbelief of so many reviewers here. This goes well beyond "Hollywood Babylon" in explicitness and naming names. A real page-turner. Definitely not a re-hash of tired, familiar stories or questionable speculation; Scotty knew and saw them all up close and decided his fascinating tale was worth sharing, now that most of the denizens of old Hollywood are gone. The book's tone is never mean-spirited.
Gore Vidal calls the book startling and vouches for Scotty's veracity.
For those with delicate sensibilities: approach with caution. Some readers will be offended by "distasteful" and unflattering details about favorite celebrities, but if you're going to tell this kind of story nowadays, you might as well go ALL the way, and Scotty does!
A Vanity Fair writer and award-winning documentary film-maker has signed a deal to make a documentary about Scotty. Shortly after "Full Service" was published, a writer for L.A Weekly called Raymond Burr's life-partner, Robert Benevides - whom Scotty claimed to have set up with Burr - and Benevides confirmed as true everything that Bowers said about him and Burr. Benevides replied: "Scotty Bowers is the most honest person I've known, with the best memory for names and places I've ever seen. If he tells you that something happened to somebody, then that's the way it was." He said the idea that Scotty makes up stories is "laughable."

As one reviewer said, you'll never look at Turner Classic Movies quite the same.
(By the way, I don't know or have any connection at all with Scotty Bowers or the publisher.)
Recommended.

Good ol' Scotty reminds me of what the elder priest ...
By bookreader
Where do I begin. When I bought this book I really wanted to take the man at his word....but after reading it , it was evident it was a cross between Forest Gump meets Penthouse forum type of book. Good ol' Scotty reminds me of what the elder priest said to the younger one in the movie Exorcist , when he warned him "The demon will mix truth with lies in order to confuse us" . Sure some of what Scotty said could have happened but it gets ridiculously laughable how much BS most of it is. Let's see, he claims in 1964 when Brian Epstein the Beatles manager had booked a room at the Beverly Hills hotel that he changed his mind because female fans had already found out what hotel they were staying at so he needed a more secretive location. As soon as the plane landed he made a call. Did he call a travel agent? Professional concierge? Nope he called ex gas pumper, part time bartender, occasional pool digger Scotty Bowers to arrange him a safe place. On to another tale. He claims he wore a uniform at his job at the gas station and one time after a night of 'tricking' he was worn out and decided to take a nap in the park on the way to work , we can assume while in uniform. While sleeping he wakes up to find a man satisfying his and I quote 'throbbing member' neither scotty or the man feel awkward about this and they become 'fast friends' . Now who in their right mind no matter what sexual orientation they are, would go up to an ex-marine, in a gas station uniform and decide to run their hands in his pants while sleeping? well who would that didn't have a death wish? Now he also mentions that he would 'happily' (that word get's used so much it's clear a thesaurus wasn't on the editing table) get young women for Errol Flynn. Errol had taken him out to dinner and asked him this favor. After all we all know Errol Flynn had trouble getting women, so he needed the help of a gas attendant to hook him up. Tyrone Power was another 'good friend', so was Spencer Tracy, Laurence Olivier, British Royalty, George Cukor, Tennessee Williams, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant , a Nevada Judge, the owners of The Beverly Hills Hotel, and yet with all these connections and 'great friends ' he never managed to get a job that paid more than probably minimum wage.

Then there's Katherine Hepburn. He claims that over the course of 50 years he got her 150 women for sex. Well let's see ol' Scotty you started hustling in 1946 so 50 years later would be 1996, hmmm. Katherine Hepburn was born in 1907 so if you still were getting her sex partners until she was 89 in 1996 then all I can say is those girls earned their money. He claims that even up until 1984 he would still sell himself to some queens. Now let's see Scotty was born in 1923 and in 1984 he'd be 61. Yup, I can think of nobody a wealthy old gay man would rather buy sex from than someone who is 61 and is an aging roofers helper, odd jobs handy man , and weekend bartender.

He also describes his sex as always great, never had ED, no mention of STD's , had a big one, could go all night and even went as far as to say he was always proud of his 'loads'. In essence Scotty is entertaining but full of it. He's the guy you get stuck sitting next to on a greyhound bus that is funny and makes the time go by, not because he's got great tales but because he's so full of it you can't help but laugh and he makes the trip go faster.

Something for Everyone
By John Erman
Scotty worked for me for years. He tended bar, he pruned trees, and he packed us up when we moved away from Los Angeles. This book was like a visit with an old friend. But, Scotty was forever youthful, forever enthusiastic, and a nice guy. This comes through in the book, which is amazing, because some of his stories will raise your eyebrows. He describes life in Hollywood as it will never be again. I was happy to read at the conclusion that his current life is a happy one. He deserves it. And, if you choose to read this eminently readable book, I think you'll have a good time. I did.

Idioms in the Bible Explained and a Key to the Original Gospels, by George M. Lamsa

World-renowned Bible translator and commentator George M. Lamsa explains nearly one thousand crucial idioms that will enrich reading of the Old and New Testaments for students and general reader alike.

Lamsa, who was raised speaking Aramaic in a community that followed customs largely unchanged since the times of Christ, offers fresh, accurate translations of important idioms, metaphors, and figures of speech found in the Scripture--and provides clear explanations of their meaning of biblical context.

Just as Shakespeare, Milton, and Browning wrote in the vernacular for English-speaking people, Moses the prophets, and the apostles wrote for their own people in the plain language of their times, so that even the unlearned might understand God's Word. Over the centuries, inaccurate translations and misunderstandings of customs and concepts have led to difficulties in bringing the biblical message to contemporary English-speaking readers.

For example, when a man says to Jesus, "let me bury my father," Lamsa points out that this expression means, "Let me first take care of my father until he dies." Traditionally, scholars assumed that this man's father was dead and that Jesus was not interested in his burial. Lamsa's scholarship offers a more accurate understanding of the intent and spirit of this passage.

Idioms in the Bible Explained and a Key to the Original Gospels goes far in correcting such errors that have crept into Biblical scholarship. Obscure and difficult passages from both Old and New Testaments are listed and compared with the King James version (though it will be helpful when used with any English version). These make clear the original meaning of such ancient idioms and assure that our grasp of the biblical message is more sound and rewarding.

To further uncover the original teachings of Scripture, Idioms in the Bible Explained and a Key to the Original Gospels, Lamsa discusses at greater length such topics as "The Language of Jesus," "Aramaic Phraseology," "The Sayings of Jesus," "Early Translations," and more..

Excellent book
By Alan Beggerow
This book explains certain items in the bible with their meaning in Aramic, the language of Jesus' time.
These colloquial meanings of some familiar parts of scripture did shed new light on some of the ancient texts. All of us read Christian scripture that has been handed down from transcription to translation to interpretation for many centuries. It was interesting to read the possible meanings of some of this scripture.
Books like this are valuable because they help us to see the context in which they were written. If an accounting for context and the historical era aren't taken into consideration, can the truth of scripture ever be revealed? Even if scripture was inspired by God?

Periodic Fasting: Repair your DNA, Grow Younger, and Learn to Appreciate your Food, by Cristian Vlad Zot

In a modern world where it's considered normal to consume 3 meals and additional snacks everyday (otherwise you will get sick), fasting can be considered an outrageous and even dangerous practice. One of the biggest fears of fasting is the fear hunger, the false hunger that most people are afraid of while depleting their glycogen stores (the body sugar storage). Fasting has often been associated with religious customs. It is time to define a line between the two. In Periodic Fasting, I embark on a timeless journey from the very beginning of life on Earth, through early human societies, through the middle Ages and into modern days to explore the concepts and practices of prolonged fasting and intermittent fasting (IF). Periodic Fasting is about: 1. My early life encounters with fasting in the small village of my grandparents (using a high-carb diet). 2. How primitive life-forms on Earth and fasting co-evolved; fasting in the animal kingdom. 3. Early hominid species, food restriction, and meal frequency. The first organized human societies and the switch between irregular feeding to regular dietary patterns. Circadian rhythmicity and meal timing. 4. The personal story of a man from the middle Ages who started consuming less food in his mid-thirties because of poor health and lived to 102 years (narrated by himself). 5. The dozens of prolonged fasting experiments in the beginning of the 20th century; fasting as a cure to many ailments. 6. How people can live without food for 139, 236 and even 382 days (medically supervised experiments). Details of 7-40 days fasts done by lean people for rejuvenation, detoxification and increased life span. 7. The emerging science and the studies of fasting from the mid-20th century (pathological implications - diabetes, obesity, CVD, cancer, and others). 8. How fasting and semi-starvation can be totally opposite: disturbing stories from the Second World War. 9. The molecular mechanisms of fasting: what happens when your body focuses on cell repair and tissue rejuvenation, instead of digesting food. 10. How the secretion of some hormones may be widely misunderstood: especially thyroid hormones and insulin. On muscle-loss phobia, mainstream media, and bro-science. 11. The modern-day science of prolonged fasting and intermittent fasting (AMPk, SIRT, FOXO, etc). 12. My personal prolonged water-only fasting experiment; insights into refeeding and realimentation after long-term fasting. 13. My 1 year and 3 months daily intermittent fasting protocol (still on-going). My ever-adapting exercising protocol (lifting), what I eat everyday, what supplements I use and what other cool strategies help me stay consistent and compliant with the protocol. 14. How I combine intermittent fasting (IF), a well formulated ketogenic diet, and calorie restriction to immensely increase the quality of my life, and paradoxically, never feel hungry; how energy levels and mood can increase if you correctly adopt a fasting protocol. Once armed with this knowledge, you will drastically alter your perspective about your body's limits.

A VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE FASTING LITERATURE
By Esme La Fleur
I have just finished reading Periodic Fasting by Cristi Vlad and really enjoyed it. I first encountered the subject of Fasting through Herbert Shelton's books and the Natural Hygiene movement. I have done numerous fasts over the past 25 years, ranging in length from 3 days to over 3 weeks. Fasting is the single best tool I have ever discovered to support my health. I am always looking for the best books on the subject to recommend to others, and Vlad's book is definitely going on my list. For longer fasting, I always recommend Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book Fasting and Eating for Health, as well as Dr. Jack Goldstein's book Triumph Over Disease Through Fasting and Natural Diet (an out of print classic). However, while I love the information they present on the benefits of fasting, I completely disagree with their plant-based dietary recommendations. A plant-based diet was extremely harmful to me, and it is unfortunate that all the best literature on fasting comes from the plant-based eating community. So, it is very nice to have a another book to recommend that focuses more on shorter intermittent-style fasting, as well as coming from a Low Carb Ketogenic perspective and approach to nutrition and health. Vlad's book is filled with fascinating anecdotes and research from the past, in addition to exploring the most recent studies available on this under-appreciated healing modality. I am glad I have added this valuable volume to my collection. Great Job Cristi!

On a side note: I recently completed a 16-day water fast with my dog to address some health issues he was experiencing. I have posted before and after blood work on my blog if you wish to see the amazing results that can be achieved very quickly simply by not eating for a short period of time:

Excellent analyses of intermittent fasting and you health.
By Red O'Laughlin
I have researched and written on fasting and I believe Christian Vlad Zot has done a marvelous job of introducing his readers to this topic. Christian introduces us to his personal experiences during fasting. He discusses the early history of intermittent fasting through testimonial reports referenced in several books. I like his nutritional research into the chemical processes occurring during fasting in the human body. He has a few charts depicting those changes over time. Christian compares fasting in the animal kingdom to those of the evolving human species. He provides insight into the differences of intermittent fasting, intermittent energy restriction, caloric restriction and ketogenic diets. He also examines the difference between fasting and starvation. Of particular interest to me was the section on physical performance and fasting. Christian provides facts backed up with lots of medical and nutritional references. I thoroughly enjoyed his book and anyone seriously interested in learning how intermittent fasting can improve your health and help you achieve healthy weight loss.

So one of the reasons why I think this book is so good is that it takes a topic that on the surface so simple: Not Eating and gets into the nitty gritty of just how profound it is and frankly how silly it is to be scared of it if one is in decent health

to further that point, the author takes the time how to implement the benefits of fasting and minimizing the pain of it by doing a ketogenic diet prior to it...

the downside is that the author took away all my fears, now I really have no excuses left for a 5-7 day water fast

Theories of Tyranny: From Plato to Arendt (Latin America), by Roger Boesche

This book explores a little-noticed tradition in the history of European political thought. From Plato to Aristotle to Tacitus and Machiavelli, and from Tocqueville to Max Weber and Hannah Arendt, political thinkers have examined the tyrannies of their times and have wondered how these tyrannies come about, how they work, and how they might be defeated. In examining this perennial problem of tyranny, Roger Boesche looks at how these thinkers borrowed from the past—thus entering into an established dialogue—to analyze the present. Although obviously tyrannies are not identical over time (Hitler certainly did not rule as Nero), we can learn partial lessons from past thinkers that can help us to better understand twentieth-century tyrannies.

Review

“A great achievement in the scholarship of political philosophy. Anyone who wants to think deeply about the meaning of tyranny must read it.”

—American Political Science Review (APSR)

“Lucid in its analysis and accessible in style, Boesche’s book will prove to be a wonderful companion piece for students looking for a fresh interpretive angle on the classic texts of political philosophy.”

—Review of Metaphysics

“This book is an unexpected pleasure. Unexpected, because the topic of tyranny might seem antiquated, dark, and plain uninviting. But the subject becomes perversely fascinating under Roger Boesche’s pen. Written in steady, jargon-free prose, Theories of Tyranny holds the reader’s attention and sustains one’s interest over the course of almost 500 pages. . . . Each well-researched chapter contains insightful gems. . . . The strength of the book—I would even say the marvel of the book—is that Boesche truly identifies or at least creatively redescribes an entire subterranean ‘tradition’ of discourse in the European canon just at the time when that form of theorizing was thought to be exhausted or discredited.”

—Political Theory

“[Boesche’s] treatment of such different authors as Tacitus, Tocqueville, and Freud is clever, elegant, and never perfunctory; his final definition of tyranny as ‘the form of government that least meets human needs’ is both correct and attractive, for it reminds us that tyranny is not only the symbol of political evil but also an actual form of government that too many people have experienced.”

—Booklist

“Always clear and concise. . . . original. . . . provocative.”

—American Historical Review

“This book is not only a significant historical and analytical study of the idea and concept of tyranny—a project that is in itself unique and distinctive—but a sensitive and creative rendering of the classic texts that are discussed as well as of the work of twentieth-century theorists such as Arendt.”

—John Gunnell, SUNY at Albany

“This is a very useful volume on an important, but neglected, topic. Boesche skillfully reconstructs the rich tradition of reflection on tyranny in Western political thought.”

—Bernard Yack, University of Wisconsin

A Good Start
By A Customer
Although a theme explored throughout the history political theory, no one has brought together a theory of tyranny like Boesche does in this book. It is a rich analysis, but an incomplete one. There seems to be some notables thinkers absent from this analysis. For instance--Aristotle. For this reason, this book should be considered the beginning of an analysis of tyranny rather than the end.
In some ways, Boesche appears to also take too big a bite out of a complex subject. He spends a lot of time dealing with classical and modern theories of tyranny, but much less with more recent accounts. For instance, he offers a small section on Hannah Arendt, one of the more intriguing 20th century theorists (although she herself would probably dispute that label). A reading of Foucault might also be beneficial, especially if we start looking beyond simply tyranny by actors and towards a tyranny of technologies that may remove the power from the agent and place it into a structure.
However, do not allow this criticism to detract from the strength of the book which is a broad reading of tyranny across a number of thinkers. I highly recommend anyone interested in political theory and tyranny to read this book.

A superb review
By Rob
This in an enlightening treatment of the subject of tyranny, in the context of a really excellent review of political thought from classical to modern times. Boesche's mastery of the subject is evident from the clarity of the narrative, which is also quite engaging. I especially enjoyed Chapter 2, entitled "Aristotle: Tyranny as Unnatural."

Nervous Conditions, by Tsitsi Dangarembga

A modern classic in the African literary canon and voted in the Top Ten Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century, this novel brings to the politics of decolonization theory the energy of women’s rights. An extraordinarily well-crafted work, this book is a work of vision. Through its deft negotiation of race, class, gender and cultural change, it dramatizes the ‘nervousness’ of the ‘postcolonial’ conditions that bedevil us still. In Tambu and the women of her family, we African women see ourselves, whether at home or displaced, doing daily battle with our changing world with a mixture of tenacity, bewilderment and grace.

From Publishers Weekly
Tambu, an adolescent living in colonial Rhodesia of the '60s, seizes the opportunity to leave her rural community to study at the missionary school run by her wealthy, British-educated uncle. With an uncanny and often critical self-awareness, Tambu narrates this skillful first novel by a Zimbabwe native. Like many heroes of the bildungsroman, Tambu, in addition to excelling at her curriculum, slowly reaches some painful conclusions--about her family, her proscribed role as a woman, and the inherent evils of colonization. Tambu often thinks of her mother, "who suffered from being female and poor and uneducated and black so stoically." Yet, she and her cousin, Nyasha, move increasingly farther away from their cultural heritage. At a funeral in her native village, Tambu admires the mourning of the women, "shrill, sharp, shiny, needles of sound piercing cleanly and deeply to let the anguish in, not out." In many ways, this novel becomes Tambu's keening--a resonant, eloquent tribute to the women in her life, and to their losses.

Review
Many good novels written by men have come out of Africa, but few by Black women. This is the novel we have been waiting for... it will become a classic. (Doris Lessing)

Tsitsi Dangarembga -- Winner of the 1989 Commonwealth Writers' Prize

It is the late 1960s and Tambu is a 13- year-old in rural Zimbabwe. “Although our squalor was brutal,” she says, “it was uncompromisingly ours.” Her brother Nhamo has been sent to the mission school in town, his education paid for by her uncle, the family elder. Tambu is thirsty for knowledge, and feels the injustice of being kept on the family homestead, but Nhamo tells her she’d be “better off with less thinking and more respect.” Tsitsi Dangarembga’s semi-autobiographical debut was first published in 1988, when it won a Commonwealth Writers prize. It has since become a staple on Eng Lit courses, and is now reissued with a scholarly introduction. A coming-of-age story, it ticks all the right boxes for student essayists―colonialism, gender, race―and provides a mine of information about Shona customs. Its appeal to lay readers lies with the guileless Tambu, who starts off as a rather prim little girl but turns into a perceptive and independent young woman. (The Guardian)

Dangarembga raises issues about culture, conflict, displacement, family relationships, consciousness and emancipation in a postcolonial society. On another level, it illustrates what children raised between two cultures may have to contend with. Nervous Conditions will find an audience with young people (especially women) and those working in health, teaching and social work professions (Young Minds Magazine)

Two very intelligent Shona girls lapse into cynicism and disappointment upon realizing that an elite education is not a panacea
By Amazon Customer
This novel is loosely autobiographical and takes place in the 60's and 70's in colonial Zimbabwe, then called Rhodesia. Tambu is a young girl from a very poor rural family. She is forced to live in the shadow of her favored older brother. Tambu begs her lazy sexist father to be able to attend school like her older brother but he feels she should stay home and learn to cook. Tambu is determined and goes to great lengths to earn the money to pay her school fees. She hits pay dirt when her jerk brother, who has taunted her and rubbed his privilege position in her face, suddenly dies. Tambu gets to attend the mission school in his place. There she teems up with her cousin Nyasha. Nyasha's father is head of the mission school, is the most well educated villager, and real tyrant. Nyasha's family has recently returned from England where her father completed his master's degree. Nyasha is seen as a snob by the locals because she has forgotten the Shona language and dresses like a Brit.

Tambu is very aware of just how "privileged" she is to be her uncle's charity case. As she witnesses her cousin Nyasha's rebelliousness Tambu's feistiness dissipates. Unlike Nyasha Tambu's position is precarious and she decides to survive by keeping quiet and trying her best not to cause any discord. Tambu has a rude awakening as she learns that her elite education sets her apart from her compatriots, but she really doesn't fit into colonial set either. She also must confront the realization that education is not a cure for sexism and racism.

The issues of colonialism, sexism, racism, hypocrisy, and the pros and cons of education are subtly and skillfully examined through the eyes of two teenage Zimbabwean girls. I did a graduate class project on this book. There are a lot of critical commentaries regarding this novel on the Internet. Dangarembga has also written several plays and films. There is another novel by a Zimbabwean author about girls and education called Zenzele by Moraire. Zimbabwe is also having a lot of problems right now, mostly thanks to a lunatic dictator. There are many organizations trying to help. If you want to help do an Internet search for "Zimbabwe, women, and education."

A must read...
By Kathleen M. Deming
This is an engrossing book. The story details the life (and growth) of a young girl in a patriarchal culture. I cheered her every ambition, endeavor, and accomplishmnt. Her courage to move beyond her "station" in life is nothing but amazing. But it's not just her story - it belongs to all her female relations and how they accept or defy their expected place. Actually, it probably belongs to many women at one time or another. I look forward to reading the sequel with much anticipation.
