Life Is So Good, by George Dawson, Richard Glaubman

One man’s extraordinary journey through the twentieth century and how he learned to read at age 98

“Things will be all right. People need to hear that. Life is good, just as it is. There isn’t anything I would change about my life.”—George Dawson

In this remarkable book, George Dawson, a slave’s grandson who learned to read at age 98 and lived to the age of 103, reflects on his life and shares valuable lessons in living, as well as a fresh, firsthand view of America during the entire sweep of the twentieth century. Richard Glaubman captures Dawson’s irresistible voice and view of the world, offering insights into humanity, history, hardships, and happiness. From segregation and civil rights, to the wars and the presidents, to defining moments in history, George Dawson’s description and assessment of the last century inspires readers with the message that has sustained him through it all: “Life is so good. I do believe it’s getting better.”

WINNER OF THE CHRISTOPHER AWARD

From Publishers Weekly
A 101-year-old retired laborer who enrolled in a literacy class near his Dallas, Tex., home at the age of 98, George Dawson now reads and writes on a third-grade level. From Dawson's eloquent words, co-writer Glaubman, a Seattle elementary school teacher, has fashioned two engrossing stories. First is the inspiring saga of how someone who was the grandson of a slave managed to navigate the brutally segregated small Texas town of Marshall, where Dawson was born, without losing his integrity or enjoyment of life. Although he worked from an early age and was never able to attend school, Dawson credits his strong family, especially his father, for giving him the skills to survive. His father told him to work hard, to do no wrong and always to avoid trouble with white people--advice that was brutally underscored the day he and his father witnessed a white mob lynching a black neighbor. The other theme running through these recollections is the institutionalized racism of the American South. Hardened to the entrenched discrimination that excluded him from good jobs and "white" restaurants and rest rooms, Dawson protested just once, when a woman for whom he was doing yard work expected him to eat with her dogs. Despite the harsh conditions of his life, he considers himself fortunate to have enjoyed food, housing, friends and family (he has outlived four wives and fathered seven children). This is an astonishing and unforgettable memoir. Agent, Harriet Wasserman. (Feb.)

From Library Journal
Dawson, a black manual laborer who learned to read at age 98, has written a memoir that stands apart from other end-of-the-century texts and from the history generally recorded in textbooks--but is essential to an accurate understanding of this century. The product of a collaboration between Dawson and high school history teacher Glaubman, the book juxtaposes significant events of the century with Dawson's personal experiences. Although he endured hardship, Dawson's positive philosophy sustained him to a ripe old age. Written in a simple, conversational style, this volume will be valuable for general readers and in college classes. A welcome addition to any academic or public library.

From Kirkus Reviews
The memoir of George Dawson, who learned to read when he was 98, places his life in the context of the entire 20th century in this inspiring, yet ultimately blighted, biography. Dawson begins his story with an emotional bang: his account of witnessing the lynching of a young African-American man falsely accused of rape. America's racial caste system and his illiteracy emerge as the two biggest obstacles in Dawson's life, but a full view of the man overcoming the obstacles remains oddly hidden. Travels to Ohio, Canada, and Mexico reveal little beyond Dawson's restlessness, since nothing much happens to him during these wanderings. Similarly, the diverse activities he finds himself engaging inbootlegging in St. Louis, breaking horses, attending cockfightsnever really advance the reader's understanding of the man. He calls himself a ``ladies' man'' and hints at a score of exciting stories, but then describes only his decorous marriage. Despite the personal nature of this memoir, Dawson remains a strangely aloof figure, never quite inviting the reader to enter his world. In contrast to Dawson's diffidence, however, Glaubman's overbearing presence, as he repeatedly parades himself out to converse with Dawson, stifles any momentum the memoir might develop. Almost every chapter begins with Glaubman presenting Dawson with a newspaper clipping or historical fact and asking him to comment on it, despite the fact that Dawson often does not remember or never knew about the event in question. Exasperated readers may wonder whether Dawson's life and his accomplishments, his passion for learning despite daunting obstacles, is the tale at hand, or whether the real issue is his recollections of Archduke Ferdinand. Dawson's achievements are impressive and potentially exalting, but the gee-whiz nature of the tale degrades it to the status of yet another bowl of chicken soup for the soul, with a narrative frame as clunky as an old bone. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. Inspirational, educational, entertaining --bought extras & sequel
By MOzarkian
Life is So Good by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman "One man's extraordinary journey though the twentieth century and how he learned to read at age 98." Worth buying for school, friends, or relatives. Winner of the Christopher Award -- books that "affirm the highest values of the human spirit."

Discovered this in Barnes & Noble while looking for a book that would meet a dual credit history teacher's requirements for content (and mine for length, dialog, action, readability). This went WAY beyond my criteria because of the inspirational story and moral examples. LOVED it for so many reasons. A few...100 years of history told through the common man's pov, who happens to be black, sees first hand how people judge (and kill) based on skin color alone, relays life in a small Texas town growing up, travels the country as a young man, returns to Texas to raise a family, demonstrates perseverance, gratitude, wisdom of elders, importance of reading and lifelong learning. Bought extra copies for school, the original story and the sequel for self.

My only complaint...reader's guide question #12 in the back. "As they rode home in their wagon after seeing a lynching, George Dawson's father told his angry and outraged 10 year old son, "You have no right to judge another human being. Don't you ever forget." Ninety years later, George Dawson recounted, "I didn't know it then, but his words set the direction my life would take even till this day." Do you agree with George Dawson's father that it is never okay to judge someone? Do you think there are times when anger is a better response than acceptance?"

Imo, there should have been a question similar to..."What's the difference between judging the actions of a person as harmful and unwise, and judging the person as a whole?" (Hate the sin, not the sinner. Judge not, least ye be judged. We are walk in different shoes on the earth school journey...that kinda thing. ;-) How about this one, "Do you think there are people who know how to accept all human beings where they are, yet stand firm against their unwise choices...without the need of fear based anger?" Or for more mature readers "Anger is the protective emotion we feel when we believe our needs are not being met. Is it possible to react out of faith and love instead of fear in any situation?" (I.e., How does one become a saint? Not that I'm planning on getting there in this lifetime ;-)...but removing fear and reacting out of faith is my eventual state of being.)

A Remarkable Man
By Noble1
I simply enjoyed every word. George Dawson was a truly remarkable man. He was full of common sense, street smarts, and wisdom passed down to him from his father. Words he lived by. He inspired others when he learned to read at 97 years young and the relationship he had with the author was a warm and endearing one. His life experiences alone were remarkable. A must read!!!

This is one of my all time favorite books. It can be sad
By Sandy Bixler
This is one of my all time favorite books. It can be sad, tragic, even discouraging. Or, you can look at Mr. Dawson's life like I do. He taught me to 'keep on - keep'n on'. He taught me more than I ever throught I wanted to know about the private lives of Black men and women growing up during the 1900's. How they were raised and how they understood life. Plus, Mr. Dawson lived for many years, and passed away at 103 in my hometown of Dallas, TX. If this wonderful gentleman can overcome his many defeats to learn to read at 98 years old; well, I may just write a book,

My name is Allec Renn, and I was born with ALS.

Even with our modern technology, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cannot be treated or cured. I've been bed or chair bound since I was a kid. The advent of Virtual Reality technology has given me a chance for a new life. Or rather dozens of them. Heh.

I'm an avid gamer, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

In the games I could be what I wanted to be, who I wanted to be. A mighty warrior, a powerful spellcaster, the charming rogue. The crafter. The builder. All of those and more have helped to greatly alleviated my problems.

But a new game is coming out; one with the power to change the world. It uses a brand new technology, based around the first ever deep immersion Dive Pod. With it there is no more game lag or graphical limits. It is being heralded as the greatest breakthrough in Virtual Reality technologies since its founding.

And the first and only game for it: Universe Online.

No longer will players be stuck on a single large world to explore. No longer will there a limit to what you can do, what you can be. Fly spaceships between the stars, conquer planets, create custom technology. Mine, Build, Destroy. Explore. Rule.

This is my story, and my path in Universe Online.

Loved it, but wish it was longer
By Bryan
Loved it, but wish it was longer. I'll definitely look into the upcoming books in this series. Hopefully they will become available through Kindle Unlimited, since the prices were somewhat high for the length compared to other indies in this genre. Some reviewers complained about the attention paid to stats and abilities, but for me the complexity of the character build is a major plus for this great work. Can't wait for more.

Great start to a new series
By Amazon Customer
Great start to a new series!
I enjoyed this first book, that promises quite a few hours of reading and contemplation of this virtual world.
If I have anything negative to say it would be regarding the way the book was released in 2 parts and then a combined version, rather wait a bit longer and complete the book before release.

Decent Space Sim LitRPG
By Film Critic 2302487
Quality LitRPG. The story worked well and I liked the protagonist. The ending was disappointing, with a cliffhanger described as a mid-chapter break.

Pros: Good setting, decent plot, believable pseudo-science to the game (effects of weightlessness exhaustively detailed).
Cons: Quickly adding NPCs pushed some interesting survival details to the back and replaced it with not-so interesting conversations and plot. Character was given Psychic powers but nothing interesting was explained about them and later they were forgotten.

Editing: The book being sold separately by parts with a complete edition made it difficult to know if one of them was a second book. Once he starts adding more books/parts it is going to be a mess figuring out which part/book goes in order. Needs a clear order in title!

Secondhand Bride (The Almost Wives Club Book 2), by Nancy Warren

As the poor relation in the rich and powerful Carnarvon family, Ashley Carnarvon is used to hand-me-downs. But getting handed down a wedding dress that’s cursed? Okay, the curse is bad enough, but even worse, the dress doesn’t suit her. The fabulous gown was designed for a taller, slimmer bride who ran away before the wedding and never wore the dress – which gets back to the curse…

At twenty-five, Ashley’s not sure what she wants to do with her life. She’s still living on the Carnarvon compound in Malibu, sharing a cottage on the property with her mother. She goes to school part time, works part time and parties more than she should. Mostly, she parties with Eric Van Hoffendam, who’s the slacker in his rich, powerful family. A lot of their friends are starting to get married and when Eric asks her to marry him, she likes the idea. Eric doesn’t look down on her or demand anything of her. Life with him would be easy, and Ashley likes things to be easy.

Bennett Saegar has a bad habit of making his life harder than it needs to be. Trying to make it as a Hollywood screenwriter is hard enough, but when a movie star stages a very public suicide attempt over unrequited love for him, the media frenzy is so bad he needs a place to hide out. Ashely gets a hand me down gown....
    By Gatorfan
This is Book 2 in the series of the "dress". They are stand alone books. It is more fun to read in order but you don't have to. Loved it. The dress has been passed down to a poor relative!!! Thus the second hand bride. The first bride didn't quite make it to the altar in the dress but she didn't want anything to do with it. So, when the aunt and uncle that allows the "bride" and her mother to live on the pr4operty give her the dress as a gift she is sort of stuck with it.

This poor girl has not had the best luck. Problems with the parents not marrying and then no support for the mother so she has to live on the goodwill of her brother. For 10 years she has been in a friends with benefits with a neighbor (also wealthy) that she went to school with. There is not a lot of actual love involved, mostly just sexual in nature. So, when he out of the blue proposes to her she accepts because there is really no better offer on the table and why not. There are some strange goings on as the adults all get involved in making this wedding happen as soon as possible. And no, she is not pregnant.

Then comes Ben. At 16 she knew she would love Ben forever however, being a couple of years older he didn't really get that excited about her crush. Well, now she is older and looks it and he is taking a second look. she is engaged but the groom to be seems a little weird in his actions, etc. towards her. She is wondering if she is making a mistake.

Then a bomb goes off and all plans are up in the air. It is fun to see where this goes and what happens to the dress. does she wear it and walk down the aisle? or what? I really enjoyed this story. At first I didn't really care for the heroine, Ashley. But as the story goes on and you get to know her and see that some things that were assumed are not really true the opinion changes. I definitely recommend this second installment of the "traveling dress". I am anxious to see where it goes next and how it gets there. A fun read.

    Entertaining
    By Sandy Milan
I have really enjoyed this quirky, short story series so far (this is book 2). The premise is a that a designer wedding dress has been cursed and the brides don't end out getting married. This h finds herself engaged to her friend with benefits in a very quick and surprising way. The h is the original poor relation and is always treated like a doormat. The H arrives back on the scene after 10 years of not being around. He is a successful screenplay writer but is hiding out after a stalker actress attempted to commit suicide when he spurned her advances. He hides out in the pool house on the property where the h is living in a cottage. She had a crush on the H as a teenager but now she's all grown up and getting married. The H sees that the marriage would be all wrong for her, he wants to help her but he doesn't want to get involved in a relationship. It's a cute short story and I can't wait for the next one.

    Sweet, gem of a story
By Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon
Every now and then, a gem comes along and it is just what the doctored ordered. “Secondhand Bride” is Book Two in the Almost Wives Club Series and is interconnected, but can be read as a standalone. As a side note, I didn’t read the first book and could easily follow the plot. I will, however, now read Book One.
Ashley Carnarvon is used to being second best. Along with her mother, she lives on the estate of wealthier, illustrious relatives, receiving a judgmental form of charity that is enough to get them by, but not enough to let them prosper.
Her friends with benefits of the last ten years, Eric Van Hoffendam, is the man-child, ne’er do well son of a powerful and illustrious family, one that equals her relatives. One night, Eric proposes and to Ashley’s surprise, she, the outsider, is welcomed into both families with open arms.
The pending nuptials set in motion a chain of events: the speed, the disinterest of her fianc, the domineering attitudes of her aunt, uncle, and her future mother-in-law, but most importantly, the dress. Ashley is given a hand-me-down wedding dress that may or may not be cursed.
Enter Bennett Saegar: Ashley’s teenage crush and a family friend of the Carnarvons. Now a famous scriptwriter, Ben is fleeing from problems of his own. Hiding out, he winds up at the estate Ashley lives on and finds ten years alters your perspective.
This book is a funny, witty, quirky, feel-good story about women who undervalue themselves and the people who don’t deserve them. Both of the main leads were likeble, lovable, and relatable.
There are a few minor editorial issues in this work: typographical errors and consistency where Ashley is described as the daughter of her uncle and not the niece.
If you are looking for stories that lift your spirits and cheer for the under-dog, this is the series for you. I read this book in one sitting and Nancy Warren is now one of my go-to authors to make me feel good.
