I absolutely LOVE this book and am enjoying taking my time reading ...

I first discovered this book at my neighborhood library and found it so fascinating that I had to buy my own copy through Amazon. I absolutely LOVE this book and am enjoying taking my time reading every single page. I find nutrition so interesting and this book is very inspiring and makes you want to go out and buy all of these wonderful foods because you know how good they are for you! The other day I bought some fresh, organic okra, peppers and blueberries at my local farmers market and couldn't wait to get home and look them up in the book and find out how good they were going to be for me. I also enjoyed reading the top ten foods of nutrition experts/doctors in the book. Jonny Bowden, thank you for taking the time to publish this great book!

Inspired My Kids to Try New Veggies

I let my kids (ages 7, 9 and 12) look through this book and pick new fruits and veggies to try. They love seeing what nutrients are in each food and looking for the ones they think would be best for them! As an adult I appreciate having this as a reference book and refer to it periodically for inspiration in living and eating healthy. It includes sections on Vegetables, Grains, Beans/Legumes, Fruits, Nuts/Seeds/Nut Butters, Soy, Dairy, Meat/Poultry/Eggs, Fish/Seafood, Beverages, Herbs/Spices/Condiments, Oils and Sweeteners.

One of my favorite parts is that at the end of each section there is an "Expert's Top Ten" list included because everyone always wants to know what those who REALLY know about health and nutrition eat! Clear winners in these lists are blueberries, spinach, kale, nuts, broccoli, and wild salmon. There are also some surprises - coffee made two expert lists! It's really interesting (and informative) to see what the experts eat on a daily basis! Great book!

You can truly believe what is in this book. I love the red starred items, which shows the healtiest of the healthiest foods. No silly diet gimmicks here, just the facts of what is the best for your body. I review this book all the time to continue to learn and add more and more of the healthiest foods to my diet. I have lost 190 pounds with this books help, because if you eat the healtiest foods, your body doesn't crave food / nutrition, it's really that simple. I also love all of the experts top ten foods all throughout the book, this allows you to see other experts opinions as well. I don't know why you need to read anything else???

About the Author
Born in Vienna in 1909, Peter F. Drucker was educated in Austria and England. From 1929 he was a newspaper correspondent abroad and an economist for an international bank in London. Since 1937 he has been in the United States, first as an economist for a group of British banks and insurance companies, and later as a management consultant to several of the country's largest companies, as well as leading companies abroad. Drucker has since had a distinguished career as a teacher, first as Professor of Politics and Philosophy at Bennington College, then for more than twenty years as Professor of Management at the Graduate Business School of New York University. Since 1971 he has been Clarke Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School in California. In addition to his management books, Peter Drucker is also renowned for his prophetic books analysing politics, economics and society. These books span fifty years of modern history beginning with The End of Economic Man (1939) and including The Practice of Management; Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Managing in the Next Society; Management Challenges in the 21st Century; The Effective Executive and The Essential Drucker.

Great read for those looking to understand why and how to make decisions.

I am a business owner with two other partners. This book provided some great insight as to how we work as individuals in a work environment, and why we make those decisions. It also helped to clear some of my frustration with some issues at work as it made me realize everyone has a different mindset in how we process information and decisions. I think it's a great read for those that may be trying to better understand their current work environment.

Great advice on executive effectiveness

You know you read the writing of great thinker when the line of text in front of you is simple and yet powerful. Peter Drucker writes like that. The Effective Executive is one of those books that wake up your intellect: simple, unpretentious, direct, based on experience and well practiced art of detecting underlying principles hiding behind our mundane tasks.

Effective managers, according to Peter, follow eight principles:
- Ask "what needs to be done?"
- Ask "what is right?"
- Develop action plans
- Take responsibility for decisions
- Take responsibility for communicating
- Focus on opportunity rather than problem
- Run productive meetings
- Think and say "we" rather than "I"

I like for instance how he describes the taking of responsibility for decisions: a decision has not been made until people know: the name of the person accountable for carrying it out, the deadline, the names of the people who will be affected by it, and the names of the people who will be informed. Simple, isn't it?

A penetrating observation is that in large organisations people tend to be absorbed by what happens inside its boundaries and by perfecting a process regardless of the outside world. The removal of the executive from the customer base is fatal in the long run.

Other thought that I liked is that the effective executive does not make decisions by consensus, but by what is right, even if the decision is not popular. The executive makes a few decisions, but powerful, rather than many razzle-dazzle decisions.

I have this book handy, so that when I have time, I choose to read randomly a page or two. It's like doing meditation. It is simple, elegant and very sharp. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

How and why, “like every other discipline, effectiveness can be learned and must be earned

Note: Amazon continues to feature reviews of earlier editions. What immediately follows is my review of the 50th anniversary edition published today, January 24, 2017. What then follows is my review of an earlier edition.

This is the 50th anniversary edition of a book first published in 1967. Jim Collins provides the Foreword and Zachary First the Afterword. In my opinion, Peter Drucker (1909-2005) is the most influential business thinker as indicated by the endless list of other thought leaders who continue to acknowledge his value and significance to their own work. He always insisted on referring to himself as a “student” or “bystander.” With all due respect to his wishes, I have always viewed him as a pioneer who surveyed and defined dimensions of the business world that no one else had previously explored.

Consider this passage in the Foreword: “Here are ten lessons I learned from Peter Drucker and this book, and that I offer as a small portal of entry into the mind of the greatest management thinker off all time.” These are the lessons that Collins cites and discusses:

1. First, manage thyself.
2. Do what you’re made for.
3. Work how you work best (and let others do the same).
4. Count your time, and make it count.
5. Prepare better meetings.
6. Don’t make a hundred decisions when one will do.
7. Find your one big distinctive impact.
8. Stop what you would not start.
9. Run lean.
10. Be useful.

“He was in the end, Collins adds, "the highest level of what a teacher can be: a role model of the very ideas he taught, a walking testament to his teachings in the tremendous lasting effect of his own life.”

As was true of Collins and will be true 0f everyone else who reads one of the several editions, they will have their own take-aways. Drucker provides a framework in the Introduction, stressing while discussing the importance of eight specific practices that all great business and non-profit CEOs are committed to, such as asking “What needs to be done?” and “What is right for the enterprise?” The first two enable them to obtain the information they need.

The next four help them to convert this knowledge into effective action:

3. Develop action plans.
4. Take responsibility for decisions [and their consequences].
5. Take responsibility for communicating.
6. Are focused on opportunities rather on problems.

The last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable

7. Run productive meetings.
8. Think and feel “we” rather than “I.”

Yes, these are basic and obvious practices but they were not five decades ago. Until Drucker, thinking about management lacked order, structure, clarity, and focus. Borrowing a phrase from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Drucker developed thinking about management to “the other side of complexity.” To paraphrase, Albert Einstein, Drucker made management “as simple as possible but no simpler.”

In the Introduction Peter Drucker concludes, “We’ve just covered eight practices of effective executives. I’m going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one’s so important that I’ll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last [end italics]”...And, like every discipline, effectiveness [begin italics] can [end italics] and [begin italics] must [end italics] be earned.”

The title of this review is a portion of one of Peter Drucker's most important insights: "The most serious mistakes are not being made as a result of wrong answers. The true dangerous thing is asking the wrong question."

I first read this book when it was originally published in 1967 and have since re-read it several times because, in my opinion, it provides some of Peter Drucker's most important insights on how to "get the right work done and done the right way." By nature an "executive" is one who "executes," producing a desired result (an "effect") that has both impact and value. As Drucker once observed in an article that appeared in Harvard Business Review at least 40 years ago, "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Therefore, the effective executive must develop sound judgment. Difficult - sometimes immensely difficult - decisions must be made. Here are eight practices that Drucker recommended 45 years ago:

o Ask, "what needs to be done?"
o Ask, "What is right for the enterprise?"
o Develop an action plan
o Take responsibility for decisions.
o Take responsibility for communications.
o Focus on opportunities rather than on problems.
o Conduct productive meetings.
o Think in terms of first-person PLURAL pronouns ("We" rather than "I").

The first two practices give executives the knowledge they need; the next four help them convert this knowledge into effective action; the last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable, and will thus be more willing to become engaged. "I'm going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one's so important that I'll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last." [end italics]

This volume consists of eight separate but interdependent essays that begin with "Effectiveness Can Be Learned" and conclude with "Effective Decisions." Actually, there is a "Conclusion" in which Drucker asserts that "Effectiveness Must Be Learned." I agree. The essays are arranged in a sequence that parallels a learning process that prepares an executive to "assume responsibility, rather than to act the subordinate, satisfied only if he `pleases the boss.' In focusing himself and his vision on contribution the executive, in other words, has to think through purposes and ends rather than means alone."

I highly recommend this to all executives who need an easy-to-read collection of reminders of several basic but essential insights from one of the most important business thinkers, Peter Drucker. I also presume to suggest that they, in turn, urge each of their direct reports to obtain a copy and read it. The last time I checked, Amazon sells a paperbound edition for only $11.55. Its potential value is incalculable.

A heart warming story! I cried, but they were happy tears for the happy ending, and a story full of hope and courage

Wow!! Thanks to Kindle, I was able to download the book at about one in the morning, and it's now seven in the morning. I have not read a book in one sitting, or in one night for years!

People who saw the ABC interview with Diane Sawyer saw how warm and lovely this young lady is, and her book is like the interview but a hundred times warmer and more personal.

Jaycee's story is refreshing in that it's written by her, and not from a co-author. Much of the book are pages and pages taken from the actual journal entries she wrote while in her backyard prison. You can tell that her journal entries read in much same way as the rest of the book, so in a sense, the entire book is a continuation of her journaling and her ongoing mission in life to help others. For example, it's hard to tell when you're reading from her old journal entries from her more current writings of when she's authoring this book. It's really all one voice, and you definitely get a feel for how her voice resonates through.

Some readers on comment sections of news sites have mentioned they don't want to read the book due to graphic scenes being portrayed. Yes, these scenes are there, but written in a very mature way that I think people should really read. The book doesn't focus on these scenes, as rather the book focuses on simply sharing her story and conveying her sense of hope that's still beaming today. But the sexual abuse scenes are important to all of America as they describe horrifying sexual acts that often go by generic terms like 'rape' and 'molestation.' But what do those mean? Jaycee paints a much clearer picture, and in doing so, acts as the voice for all the victims of sexual abuse that can't share their story.

In America, sexual abuse is something that gets pushed under the rug, or punished. It's like there's no in between. Jaycee didn't know what the word rape meant while the act was being done to her, and I remember when I was 11 (I was also born in 1980 like Jaycee), I didn't know what the word rape meant either. I don't think I learned what the word meant until I was 13 or 14. Perhaps if more people learn about sexual abuse, and what it actually entails, then more can be done to protect innocent victims. And more importantly, when people realize what goes on behind closed doors of rapists, perhaps there won't be parole after just a few years for somebody who had already raped a woman for eight hours straight in a warehouse. Jaycee does an excellent job showing how her captor is a repeat offender, one that therapy cannot solve. Jaycee goes on to describe the failure of the therapists that her captor visited, and how they enabled him more than anything by allowing him to make excuses rather than be accountable for his behavior.

With all this being said, this book is probably not for young teenagers to read by themselves, as Jaycee shares vivid accounts of sexual abuses that happened to her; abuses she didn't even know the names for at the time. Cautiously I note, the entire book would be a great one for a parent and teenager to read and discuss together, with parental guidance on parts of the book that are tough to read or perhaps need proper perspective put into place. (Parents, you must read the book first, as you're the one to judge if the book is appropriate or not for your teenager). In my opinion, I think it's a subject that needs to be talked about more, even if it's difficult to read, but of course, that's up to parental discretion.

The only part I found that was hard to read in the book were the journal entries that talk about her thoughts and reactions to her captor's ongoing talk about Angels and how her captor believed the Angels control people. I don't know how many pages in the regular book, but it was a few pages on the Kindle. While it's tough to read, it illuminates just how unimaginably tougher it would be to live in that kind of manipulative situation on a daily basis.

What's also tough but enlightening to read is how much compassion she has for all the animals she cared for. Through all the events taking place upon her rescue, she even asks a couple officers if they can check on her animals and make sure they're okay, at which time the officers made sure to find them and get them temporary foster homes. The irony that develops through her selfless caring often mirrored her own reality: For example, Jaycee starts feeling really badly about one of her cats being locked up with her all the time, and feeling guilty for wanting the cat's company, she shares how a shed is no place for a cat. Yet she never shows any kind of self-pity on her own situation...all you see is your strength and courage.

I just can't believe these things happened to an 11 year old girl. You really get a sense into the manipulation of the captors (I refuse to say their names) and how through the horror of everything, Jaycee completely shines light throughout her memoir. It's like there's not even a 'hate' bone in her body -- she's an inspiration to us all; that love and hope conquers no matter. And the best thing is that the entire memoir is written so warmly, it's like Jaycee is sharing her story with you directly at the dinner table. And she goes on to share, now that she and her family are free, something very important to her: The simple daily act of cooking great foods and eating at the dinner table.

One last thing, in her journal entries she mentions her goals and plans for her future once she becomes free -- so many of them she's actually doing!

A tale of survival and pain

The first thing you need to know about Jaycee Dugard's book, is it is indeed a very difficult thing to read. It is a beautifully written, pull no punches account of the 18 years she spent in captivity with a very sick man, Phillip Garrido.

In a note from the author at the beginning of the book, Dugard explains that she wrote the book to attempt to convey the overwhelming confusion she endured during her years in captivity and to begin to unravel the damage that was done to she and her family. She chronicles her experience with brutal honesty. She writes about missing her mother and worrying that she will never see her again. Her dependence upon her kidnapper grows the more he isolates her from the world. For long periods of time he was the only other human being that she saw.

As you can tell from the Table of Contents, she spares no detail. You witness her physical and psychological transformation from a scared child held against her will to a woman who bears his children and runs a business with him until she is discovered. This truly is an exploration of her past. As profound as this book is in its horrific detail, it is not a triumphant, feel-good story. Other than her rescue, don't expect many warm fuzzies from this one.

If Jaycee's book interests you, I Love Yous Are for White People: A Memoir (P.S.) is another you'll undoubtedly want to read. Amazing to see people triumph over such adversity, and retell their stories so brilliantly.

inspiring ... far more compelling than I expected

This is a beautiful book.

What I have come to understand is that this is not a book about a kidnapping. This is a book about a spiritually gifted woman navigating her way through a life marked by deeply moving events. I am humbled by what I have read.

Ms Dugard is able to continue down a path of personal growth under the most constrained circumstances. The journal entries from her captivity, both as a child and later as an adult, reveal the amazingly positive energy she carries within her. She has the capacity for self-reflection at a young age, even though she is denied any personal autonomy. Later, she is able to build a semblance of a normal life for her children, home schooling them with her own curriculum despite only having a 5th grade education. She plants a garden, cares for her animals, even manages a business. All of this while enduring the constant abuse of a hyper-controlling, drug-addicted psychopath.

I am deeply inspired by her ability to keep pouring love out into the world despite being treated so horridly. Rather than turn away to some dark place, Ms Dugard performs a kind of spiritual judo, reflecting back love and compassion on the animals in her care, the children she's struggling to raise and the distant memory of her mother. She is able to resist the temptation to spew forth hatred upon the perpetrators of her abuse. Instead, she lets it go and moves on to a better place.

Frankly, I'm a bit ashamed that my initial interest in this book was based on sensationalist media coverage of the events surrounding her rescue. I was expecting to learn more about her captors and what kind of person would commit such a horrendous crime. After finishing the book, I've realized that don't care about them. Instead, I've learned something about myself: that I never need give up hope. No situation requires that I compromise myself or my beliefs. I can see now experiences in my own life where I was sucked in by the spiritual traps that Ms Dugard successfully navigated around for 18 years. I have a new role model to look up to.

Ms Dugard is living proof that "life can start over." I am indebted to her for a new understanding of those words.

Life, death, God and computers

A great book that I first read almost 20 years ago. Swigart takes you on a surreal trip through the Silicon Valley of the late seventies and through ancient Sumeria. Poking fun at life, death, God and Computers, I recommend it for anyone with a warped sense of humour

I read Mr. Swigart's great sci-fi novel: "The Time Trip," because I wanted to see how it compared to my own sci-fi novel: "Time Trip on a Moebius Strip." Even though his novel was nothing like my own, I was completely amazed by his writing...Can this man write! His story is way out...He has this brillant computer scientist teleported to ancient Mesopotamia, 2642 B.C., looking for his wife who had committed suicide in a microwave oven, believe it or not...He then meets up with his wife in a former incarnation, who doesn't even know him, and who is working as a temple prostitute. She then introduces him to of all people, the king "Gilgamesh" who becomes his best friend...They have many adventures together...What happens after that you will have to read the book to find out....If you like sci-fi novels by Kurt Vonnegut, then the novels of Mr. Rob Swigart are right up your alley....

These books touch on real-world issues such as rape, cancer, miscarriage, bullying, PTSD, grief, addiction, and many other similar subjects. Katie Weber broke Jamie Babcock’s heart when she left for Hollywood to follow her dream. Now she is back in Portland, but Jamie is afraid to have his heart broken by her again.

I have been anxiously awaiting Katie and Babs’ story, and I was not disappointed. Heck I was crying only a few pages into the book. I’m pretty sure that was a record for me.

Babs had always been my favorite Portland Storm character. In my opinion, you cannot get much better than Jamie Babcock. He is such a great guy; you want to see the best for him. He was recently made team captain. Everyone seems to believe in him but himself. He has grown so much throughout this series. Plus, he is completely dedicated to Katie.

Katie is a great heroine. She is a cancer survivor who does not give up. She is a strong individual that goes after her dreams but recognizes when her priorities change.

I love the cats in this story. Blackbeard cracked me up. I have a cat that used to like to sit on my shoulder as a kitten, so I could relate. They made for some good comic relief.

I appreciated that Katie’s father, David Webber (Webs), was trying to play matchmaker. It was an interesting turn of events since Taking a Shot (book 2.5).

I thought it was great that a few characters from the new spin off series, Tulsa Thunderbirds, made an appearance in the story. I cannot wait to read that series.

Catherine Gayle did a phenomenal job with the plot. She covers real-life issues and delivers it in a believable manner. Dropping Gloves was a heartwarming story that made me feel just about every emotion possible. This is a book has made it to my favorites. A book I enjoyed so much I pretty sure I will reread multiple times.

Finally! Katie and Bab's story. I was so excited to get this and read it especially because I knew they would get their happy ending. I just wanted to know how. And again, Catherine Gayle does not disappoint. This book was a real tear jerker as many of her books are and I honestly can say it might be good to have tissues handy. I had a hard time putting Dropping Gloves down and I can tell you that this book is well worth the money!

One of my favorite things is how little updates are dropped here and there about different characters. Sometimes the news makes you sad because they characters are no longer with the Portland Storm but they are with the Tulsa Thunderbirds so that's a bit of hope as Catherine Gayle is writing this spin off series.

I also enjoy Catherine's writing style. It's one of the few times I enjoy first person perspective. I'm not sure if it's just the characters voices or what exactly it is but I do enjoy it.

There are happy moments to take away from the sad but Catherine Gayle makes sure that it is kept pretty realistic. Life isn't always happy and that is portrayed in this book. Although they do get their happy ending.

Dropping Gloves was well worth their wait and I cannot wait for more of the Portland Storm and also the Tulsa Thunderbirds!

If you have ever talked to me (in person or social media) you know that I adore Catherine Gayle! Her Portland Storm series is the one I recommend more than any other book, ever! And this book? It's one that I've anticipated since the very first time I picked up one of her books!

Jamie Babcock is the ideal book boyfriend in so many ways. And Katie Weber? Well, we've watched her grow up, starting with her high school crush on Babs! And now? She's back - in her own book. And let me tell you, from the very first page? Catherine Gayle will blow you away.

This is possibly one of the hardest books I've ever written a review for. It's one that you NEED to read, but it's also one that I can't tell you anything about because even the slightest hint will give away major SPOILERS!!! (And I'm anti-spoiler!)

So as I've said since my first Catherine Gayle review? She'll make you wish you could fall in love all over again, and she'll make you contemplate buying stock in Kleenex brand!

(I really wish this review could be longer. The feels are heavy, the emotions high and the swoons are many! So grab the tissues, your favorite eReader and a cup of coffee, because you'll be up all night!)
