I ordered this and it was a waste of money as far as I'm concerned... I passed the test but no thanks this this....
The testing place has on line pre-tests you can take that really do help you know what will be on the test. I'd recommend taking a few of those instead of buying this...

But the youth has grand dreams: to find his own dinosaur skeleton and sell it for a small fortune, thus saving the family farm. Bones and Bravery are all he needs--plus the devotion and quick wit of his little sister.
Noble aspirations truly, but naive Daniel is soon to be initiated into the dirty business of dinosaur hunting, excavating and profiteering. He is unprepared for unscrupulous men who lie, deceive, cheat and even commit murder for gain and fame. Three gutsy kids try to protect their amazing creekside discovery, but beware the snakelike antagonist with deadly dreams of avarice.
Mostly flashbacks, the book engages in time-shifting--a literary seesaw which keeps readers alert as we glide between Present and Past in the same chapter. Young Julie's passionate memories of that fateful summer are intertwined with her long-savored trip to a city museuem with her grandchildren, to whom she confides the entire tale. This spunky Grandmother has a private agenda, as she saves Dinosaur Hall for the last. Will she bring a little sourvenir of her girlhood, as she seeks to put closure on a painful wound which has haunted her all her life? What emotions and memories will be`resurrected as she confronts the reconstructed skeleton? This is an emotionally exciting, dramatic read, pervaded by grim foreboding. My thoughts of the Book My Daniel

Julis Creath, now Julia Summerwaite, is taking her grandchildren through a history museum when she remembers her young life when her brother was alive. Julia tells the story to her grandchildren of when her brother got dinoasaur bone finding fever. I really like this book. It leads you from one page to another, not even realizing you're turning the page. Daniel, Julis's brother, finds dinoasaur bones, but has trouble with a greedy paleontologist that is trying to take the bones for himself. During the commotion Daniel gets hit by lighting and is killed. Then Daniel's pa takes over. Julia also has a little something to show her grandchildren in the museum.

This was my favorite childhood book. It inspired me to want to become a paleontologist. I find the study of dinosaurs fascinating. I am now 18 and just re-read it recently. I was just as intrigued with it now as when I was an 8-year-old child. A beautiful book that everyone should read.

About the Author
JONATHAN EARLE (Ph.D., Princeton University) is Associate Professor of History at the University of Kansas, where he is also Associate Director for Programming at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. In 2005, Earle was named a �Top Young Historian� by the History News Network. His book Jacksonian Anti-Slavery and the Politics of Free Soil, 1824-1854 won the James A. Broussard Best First Book Award from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. Earle has also authored many scholarly articles and book chapters on abolitionism, the history of the early republic, and John Brown. He has received fellowships from the NEH and the American Council of Learned Societies.

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and 19 others seized the United States Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery.

In the summer of 1859, John Brown with 21 others took up residence near Harpers Ferry on the Kennedy farm a few miles northeast of Harpers Ferry in Maryland. He trained a group of twenty-two men, including his sons Oliver, Owen, and Watson, in military maneuvers. On the night of Sunday, October 16, Brown and all but three of the men seized the armory, Halls Rifle Works and hostages from nearby farms. The first Harpers Ferry citizen to confront the raiders was Hayward Shepard, an African-American railroad baggage handler.

In general, the plan was to seize weapons and to add African-Americans to the party. Within 12 hours from the beginning of the raid, authorities in Washington ordered Colonel Robert E. Lee and an infantry detachment to Harpers Ferry. At 6:30a on the morning of Tuesday, October 18, Lee ordered a group of men to storm the engine house. In the brief but dramatic assault, Brown was received a serious head wound. Brown was taken to the Jefferson County seat of Charles Town for trial.

In his brief history of Brown and his raid, Jonathan Earle sketches the key elements of Brown's life, the political condition of the nation, the raid and immediate responses to it. One historian has describes the responses to John Brown as being being in one of two categories. Brown was incompetent and a sociopath or Brown was martyred by slaveholders.

Earle's work is among the best concise introductions to the event of 150 years ago. Brown receives a new biography about every 20 years. Most recently, Stephen Oates' To Purge This Land With Blood and David Reynolds' John Brown have done much to redeem Brown's reputation. Previous biographies from the 1920s through the 1960 focus on the irrationality and religious fundamentalism of the man. As justice and race issues came to the fore beginning in the 1950s through the present day, Brown's life and crimes have been reinterpeted in the light of the issues of the 1850s and 1860s.

Additionally, terroristic acts motivated by religion are more common today than Americans wish. Brown's understood that America was at war in the 1850s. The enslavement of about four million Africans was warfare against the Judeo-Christian God's desire for complete equality among all humans. Most abolitionists did not see Blacks, enslaved or free, to be equal. Abolitionists for the most part wished to do away with slavery but not inequality. Brown wished to do away with both slavery and inequality.

Does conscience outweigh unjust social laws?

I'm a longtime fan of the Bedford Series in History and Culture, and this new volume on John Brown's raid only reenforces my admiration. It offers a good introduction to the events leading up to the raid, the raid itself, and its immediate aftermath, as well as a judicious selection of pertinent contemporaneous documents: Brown's writings during the Blood Kansas months as well as a hair-raising account of the Pottawatomie massacre by a couple of survivors; Brown's writings about the raid itself, including the constitution for the free state he intended to found, transcripts of pre-trial interviews, snippets of his trial testimony, and several letters he wrote while awaiting execution; and newspaper editorials commenting on the raid, Thoreau's purple defense of Brown, Virginia Governor Henry Wise's address to the Commonwealth's legislature, and excerpts from the congressional Mason Report. There's also a good map of Harper's Ferry, a helpful chronology, and a bibliography.

Perhaps it's beyond the scope of this volume. But I would've liked to have seen some discussion, both in the introduction and in the compiled documents, about the deep ethical and political questions raised by the raid. As Brown says in his letters and pre-trial interviews, the raid was justified (in his mind) by a "higher law" appeal. The Constitution may sanction slavery, but conscience and the word of God do not. But as Governor Wise (as well as Abraham Lincoln, for that matter) responded, the law of the land is and ought to be inviolable. Appeals to higher laws are too subjective--too anarchic, as Wise says--to be allowed. The fascinating thing about this debate is that it's really quite independent of how one thinks about Brown. One can easily conclude (for example) that he was a fanatic who was morally wrong to attack Harper's Ferry, while still affirming that there are times in which higher law appeals are not only reasonable but morally obligatory.

When does moral law trump social law? Ought conscience be given priority in a conflict between it and the law of the land? This is really the core issue that Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry raises, and it's still very much a live one. Ought legal injustices to be tolerated until the law can be changed? But what if the powers that be refuse to change the laws? What then?

About the Author
JOHN HOERNER has been a successful retailer for more than 50 years. His work has taken him from Hovland-Swanson speciality store in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he started work in 1959, to Woolf Brothers specialty store in Kansas City, Hahne's in New Jersey, H. & S. Pogue in Cincinnati and L.S. Ayres in Indiana. In 1987 he was recruited by the Burton Group to run Debenhams, a chain of 59 department stores in the UK. In 1992 John was made Chief Executive of the parent company with over 2,000 stores in the UK. In 1998 John led the de-merger of Debenhams from the Burton Group. The remaining chains of multiples were renamed Arcadia Group, which John ran until 2000. In 2001 he joined Tesco, the world's third largest retailer, to lead the development of their clothing business. John lives on a farm in Gloucestershire with his wife Lea, their three horses, and their five rescued dogs from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

A must buy!

This book is a great book for not only retailers but any business operation. It is fun to read, and covers every aspect of marketing. It is thoughtfully written, up to date and extremely helpful to read if you are a retailer, working for a retailer, starting up your own small business or have landed your first job. The author has a good sense of humor and great advice about working as a team player in business. It is motivating, full of great information and will inspire you.

I read and enjoyed this book from "the other side" ... that of the customer rather than the retailer. The book quickly captured my interest. It is nicely organized, and the concepts are clear and well-stated, and enhanced with enlightening statistics. I learned much about what are the principles, strategies, and implementations that come together to ensure consistent retailing success. And it is a nicely novel touch that the author has included some of his favorite food recipes in the final pages of the book, in keeping with the book's overall theme.

Finley explores gradations in the opposition by examining how the region's principal national spokesmen -- its United States senators -- addressed themselves to the civil rights question and developed a concerted plan of action to thwart legislation: the use of strategic delay.

Prior to World War II, Finley explains, southern senators recognized the fall of segregation as inevitable and consciously changed their tactics to delay, rather than prevent, defeat, enabling them to frustrate civil rights advances for decades. As public support for civil rights grew, southern senators transformed their arguments to limit the use of overt racism and appeal to northerners. They granted minor concessions on bills only tangentially related to civil rights while emasculating those with more substantive provisions. They garnered support by nationalizing their defense of sectional interests and linked their defense of segregation with constitutional principles to curry favor with non-southern politicians. While the senators achieved success at the federal level, Finley shows, they failed to challenge local racial agitators in the South, allowing extremism to flourish. The escalation of white assaults on peaceful protesters in the 1950s and 1960s finally prompted northerners to question southern claims of tranquility under Jim Crow. When they did, segregation came under direct attack, and the principles that had informed strategic delay became obsolete.

Finley's analysis goes beyond traditional images of the quest for racial equality--the heroic struggle, the southern extremism, the filibusters--to reveal another side to the conflict. By focusing on strategic delay and the senators' foresight in recognizing the need for this tactic, Delaying the Dream adds a fresh perspective to the canon on the civil rights era in modern American history.

Another Side of the Civil Rights Issue

They say that when it comes to politics, the House is for offense, the Senate is for defense. That was true around the time of the Missouri Compromise, where the South feared a loss of parity in the Senate, to the Civil Rights era, where Southern senators stalled efforts to pass legislation friendly toward African Americans. In this insightful book, which recently won the coveted Hardeman Prize, Keith Finley explores the efforts by Dixie's senators to delay the passage of civil rights measures. His story begins in 1937, when senators sought to block an anti-lynching bill, to 1965, when the U.S. passed the Voting Rights Act. Finley shows that senators ultimately did not think they could defeat civil rights reform, but they were convinced they could delay it indefinitely. To bolster their efforts, they used arguments that claimed black and white people were naturally inclined toward a separation of the races, which suggested the inherent wisdom in the existing Jim Crow laws. Segregation eventually collapsed, but not for want of effort on the part of Southern senators. They believed action in Congress, not at the state level (which was plagued by race-baiting demagogues), could best maintain de jure segregation. Dr. Finley's well-researched and cogently argued book is must reading for people who want to understand the ideology of white opposition to civil rights legislation as well as the racial attitudes of white Southerners in general in the mid-20th century.

Specters of prejudice passed

This is an excellent work about a subject that has been avoided too long. The narrative describes the campaigns against providing equal protection under the law to slaves freed at the end of the Civil War, through the expansion of the Ku Klux Klan into a nationwide organization by the 1920s, the national shame of lynchings year by year, the modern Civil Rights movement born in Montgomery in 1954, the massive and coordinated filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the cloture vote that finally overcame it. The details are at times startling and the flow of the story is riveting. This work is a "must have" addition to anyone researching the Civil Rights movement and an intriguing read to those who might simply desire to add a measure more of depth and detail to their own studies.

This is a story that needed to be told, but until now has only existed in snippets in dozens of southern and civil rights history books. The legislative history of the modern civil rights era is all here. The study is significant because it details how southern U.S. Senators obstructed the struggle for racial equality for more than a generation. Along the way, Finley demonstrates that even 'moderates' whom some historians have labeled 'reluctant racists' , participated wholeheartedly in beating back Senate efforts to attack white supremacy. By taking the story back to the 1930s, Finley clearly shows an evolving southern strategy in the Senate that forestalled civil rights legislation and built coalitions with conservatives elsewhere. The author's judgments are always measured and his treatment is balanced, though he's not afraid to call the Senators to task when their hypocrisy and contradictions require it. Political junkies will especially love Finley's careful treatment of the nuances of Senate rules and regulations.

Imagery at its finest!

Shutter Step takes me back to a time when a short story from Roald Dahl or Shirley Jackson was just what I needed to transport me to another time and place. This collaboration of authors offers multitudes of fantastic imagery. In short stories, every single word needs to count to pull the reader in.
"The blond swirls ruined as they stuck to my eyes and the cut across my cheek, cemented to my skin with blood." And I Exhale, by Stephanie Pitcher Fishman.
"Marguerite, only rags, some stained a deep umber like the crust of a pie long since forgotten in a hot oven, stared back." Shaded, Dede Nesbitt.
I highly recommend this anthology of shorts. The stories are refreshing and absorbing giving the reader just enough.
